Sports News is Coming to Simpson in New Directions this Year

Opportunities, one of the great things Simpson College has to offer. Zach James, student media sports guru, has been given many opportunities on and off campus in sports broadcasting. Zach is a senior from Searsboro, Iowa majoring in multimedia journalism. He is the Student Director of Sports Content for the Simpsonian, as well as Sports and Programming Director for KSTM radio.

For the Simpsonian, Zach assigns stories to sports writers each week featuring athletes and teams. He is working on the digital side this year providing frequent updates on games and keeping the content current with news about athletes when games are not in session.

At KSTM, he is Jesse’s right hand man. His goal is to keep the community informed by producing syndicated weather updates and appearing on The Morning Storm to provide sports updates. He also hosts his own show on Monday and Thursday evenings, which frequently features local and national guests. Zach also headed up the first ever football broadcast vs. Gustavus Adolphus on September 8, 2012. At these games, he provides play-by-play reports. He says “it is good to see what happens behind the glass and make sure that I sound good on air.”

Zach is currently looking for a job upon graduation, but has already given himself a good footprint in the Des Moines area. He is the production assistant for the Mouth of the Midwest and is a beat writer for the Iowa Energy on the Iowa Sports Spotlight. Zach already has a presence as a radio personality in the Des Moines area. He came to Simpson College for the opportunity to be the the Des Moines market and it has worked out great. “I am living the dream,” as he concludes the interview.
