Ever wondered what it’s like to work for a non-profit? April Sigmund has been able to discover the experiences behind a non-profit organization this semester as the communications intern for the Iowa Environmental Council. The Iowa Environmental Council works to protect Iowa’s natural environment.
Sigmund is a senior, from Stanhope, Iowa, majoring in integrated marketing communications with a minor in graphic design. She is able to work from school creating blogs for their website about issues and programs with other organizations. “It is a great way to publicize work done by other affiliates,” Sigmund said.
Her major project this year is creating an advocacy campaign about the poor quality of Iowa’s lakes and rivers. She is working to engage more public supporters by encouraging them to write letters to the editor. This campaign has shown her how a typical non-profit would run. “I’ve learned that you have to be persistent and make them want to do it,” Sigmund said.
Sigmund has been able to use experiences from her courses at Simpson, “writing in my communications courses have given me the knowledge needed to write blogs and media type materials for the organization.”
