Speech and Debate Teams Compete in First Tournament of the Season

Simpson College Speech & Debate opened the season competing at the Indy Forensic 500 in Indianapolis on Saturday, September 21st.  This was the team’s first-ever Parli Debate tournament, having competed last year in Public Forum Debate.  This is also the

first time in over 15 years that Simpson has fielded a speech team.


Parli Debate Varsity:  Preliminary Rounds:  Ethan Fredrick & Jacy Gomez 3rd seed.  Ethan & Jacy advanced to quarter-finals. They were defeated by Purdue University on a 2-1 decision.

Ethan Fredrick was named the 2nd best speaker at the tournament in a field of 54 speakers.

Parli Debate Novice: Preliminary Rounds:  Jacob McLain and Paul Safford are the 7th seed.  Jacob and Paul advanced to quarter-finals.  They were defeated by Indiana University  on a 3-0 decision.

  • Emma Kain and Tania Perez finished with a 1-3 record in Novice Parli.
  • Tyler Millard placed 5th in After Dinner Speaking.
  • Ashley Gomez was 4th best Novice in Impromptu.
  • Kiley Murray placed 8th in Extemp.
  • Tegan Jarchow 2nd best Novice in Prose
