What was she up to?
Kelsey McLaughlin, a junior Accounting student, spent spring semester interning with BKD, LLP, a national CPA & advisor firm with a location in Des Moines. Kelsey processed tax returns from both the Des Moines and Kansas City offices under the mentorship of a manager. She often worked on returns from start to finish, correcting any needed changes as she more thoroughly learned about the process.
How did she find out about her internship?
Kelsey applied and interviewed for the internship through the ICoRN Accounting Interview Day. ICoRN – which stands for Iowa College Recruiting Network – is a consortium of 27 independent colleges and universities in Iowa which work together to connect students with employers and career opportunities. Simpson College is a proud member of ICoRN and advertises opportunities presented through the consortium widely to students. A similar Accounting Interview Day will be held next fall on Friday, September 26th, at Wartburg College.
What strengths did Kelsey demonstrate during her internship?
Kelsey demonstrated courage in her internship and was not afraid to ask questions. She took advantage of the internship being a learning experience, and leaned on many people in the office to help her grow as a young professional. Kelsey showed similar courage by taking on difficult tax returns. She pushed herself to get them finished to prove her potential to her supervisors. Kelsey also managed her time well. Because most of her returns were on a time budget, it was important to Kelsey to meet her client’s billing needs.
What did her supervisor have to say about her work?
AJ Muehling, Tax Manager, shared, “Kelsey did an excellent job at completing her returns on time and in budget. She didn’t shy away from the more difficult returns and often took charge of those returns. She asked great questions and didn’t have to be given repeat instructions. I was very impressed with how quickly she picked up our software and tax code. Overall, Kelsey did an amazing job for us this tax season.”
Why does Kelsey feel it is important for students to intern?
Kelsey commented, “I think that doing an internship gives you a lot more experience that you will not get in the classroom. I was able to learn a lot by actually getting my hands on information. I would recommend doing an internship to anyone that is considering it.”
What is on the horizon for her?
Simpson College Career Services wishes to congratulate Kelsey on her offer to join BKD, LLP full time in September 2015. Enjoy your senior year, Kelsey; a bright future awaits you!
