Simpson Colloquium is an introductory college course that seeks to integrate you into academic culture focused on engaged citizenship during your first semester on campus. The course serves several purposes. First, it familiarizes new students with the tradition of liberal arts education through the focused study of important issues – “big questions.” Second, the course provides you with a solid foundation for future academic work, both by focusing on essential skills (Written Communications and Critical Thinking) and by introducing you to campus resources. Finally, Simpson Colloquium provides you with opportunities to grow personally and intellectually, thereby enhancing your satisfaction with college life.
There is an SC class for just about every interest. Every SC is a small seminar (18 or fewer students) and learning community. A student Destination Leader, a student Writing Fellow, and a Simpson professor – who will become your academic advisor – will help you make the transition from high school to college, both socially and academically. You will meet your professor and Destination Leader at Summer Registration, where they will help you register for your other fall courses.
