Simpson Colloquium SC 101 – American Healthcare
The health care industry is one of the most dynamic, important, and challenging areas of the American economy. In this class, we will delve into the strengths and failings in the U.S. health care system. We will investigate, discuss, and debate controversial issues like access to care, rising health costs, health care quality, ethics, and the recent health care reform law. We will also learn about health services for the elderly and disabled, wellness initiatives and disease prevention, technology, health insurance, and how the U.S. compares to global health systems. Our goals are to think critically about contemporary issues in the American health care system and develop valuable research, writing, and discussion skills.
Bob DeGraaff, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor of Management
Not many people move to Iowa from Tampa, Florida, but that’s what I did in the summer of 2013 to join the Simpson College faculty.
Over the years in my career, I have held hospital senior management positions and I’ve taught numerous health care courses (such as Introduction to the American Health Care System, Health Services Management, Health Policy, Health Economics, and Health Care Finance). Recently, I worked with Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile in Santiago on academic health system strategy and structure.
I received my PhD and MBA degrees from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and have a BS from Northwestern University. My wife Lisa and I have one son, Robert, who is a senior at the College of William & Mary in Virginia. For exercise and fitness, I play ice hockey and 1875 rules baseball at the Living History Farms.
My name is Ryan Snaadt and I will be your Simpson Colloquium Leader for Dr. DeGraaff’s SC-101 class. I am from Fort Madison located in the rural southeastern tip of Iowa. While in high school I participated in as many clubs as possible, was a multi-sport athlete and exceptional student.
Currently I am a First Year student majoring in Business Management and minoring in Sociology here at Simpson College. In the short time I have been in Indianola I have met some really cool people and have had countless great experiences. I want to be an outlet for you in the beginning stages of your college journey. Moving away to college can be a difficult time, but don’t fret, I will be here for ya’! I’m looking forward to meeting you this summer and fall as you jump right in to all the fun here at Simpson!
I am looking forward to meeting everyone next school year, and learning more about your writing styles, opinions and questions. However, I am not only here to help with your writing, but with any challenges you may face as freshmen. Believe me, I had my fair share and still do. Again, I look forward to meeting everyone soon!
