I was born Kentucky and attended Centre College, where I hoped to major in biology and go on to medical school like many in my family. But in my first year of college I fell in love with politics and took on a major in political science. The world of medicine is better off because of my decision. I thought about law school (don’t all political science majors?) but decided on graduate school at the University of Virginia to pursue a Ph.D. and a career in teaching politics and government.
My studies focused on political parties and constitutional law, and after graduation I was hired by Simpson College. I have spent a very enjoyable career sharing my passion and knowledge about American politics with our students. Probably my favorite course to teach is entitled The Supreme Court and Civil Liberties. I also teach courses on political partieselections, Congress, and the American presidency.
I am an on-air commentator on U.S. politics and elections for Channel 5, the ABC affiliate in Des Moines. I live in Indianola and spend most of my free time with my family, but I also enjoy reading (mostly biographies and history) and cheering on Ohio State football and Kentucky basketball. Along with the rest of my family I am a huge fan of the Baltimore Orioles.
