Public Relations is fundamentally about building relationships with the people who matter to your organization through engaging stories. I began my career working in public relations with nonprofit organizations, and later freelancing and consulting for a variety of organizations and small businesses.
I started teaching public relations and journalism in 2005—holding positions at Central College, Drake University and since 2013, Simpson College. I recommended the Multimedia Communication Department at Simpson launch a PR major. I strongly believe PR is a universal application—pairing with countless topics, issues and other college majors.
At Simpson, I teach the six core public relations courses, including advising the PRSSA practicum experience. Two of my latest campaign projects have focused on Burmese immigrant assimilation in Des Moines and placing AmeriCorps VISTAS in specific Iowa communities that need help with post-secondary education rates.
I have plans to further develop the public relations curriculum at Simpson by identifying the highest skill demands and technology trends. By leveraging my ongoing relationships with several PR firms in Des Moines, I help students develop the skills and adaptability they need to enter into the workforce.
