Dr. Kimberly Bachelder Helton is currently Instructor or Flute at Simpson College, Indianola, IA. She previously taught at Grinnell College (1995-2005) and Drake University as a visiting professor (2000-2001). She has been third flute/piccolo with the Cedar Rapids Symphony since 2000, and has been piccoloist for Des Moines Metro Opera Orchestra for seven seasons. Ms. Helton will also be playing second flute in the Des Moines Symphony for the 2012-13, 75th year celebratory season. For this 75th Season opening gala, she has been invited to perform the movement for solo flute from the newly commissioned work by Steve Heitzeg. Ms. Helton has performed in festivals and presented master classes in Russia and throughout the Midwest. As a guest soloist, Ms. Helton has performed with numerous symphonies, including Utah Symphony, Cedar Rapids Symphony, Arapahoe Philharmonic, Des Moines Community Orchestra, Drake University and Grinnell College Orchestras.
As a chamber musician, Ms. Helton is a member of the Simpson Lyric Wind Trio, featured in March 2012 on the Salisbury House Enchantment Chamber Music Series. She is also part of Linden String/Flute Quartet and founder of the Polaris Wind Quintet—winners of the 2002 NFA Chamber Music Competition. Polaris commissioned two new works in 2011 and performed the world premiers in January, 2011. One these works will be featured on a CD release in 2012. Ms. Helton also performed and recorded with Dr. Dave Camwell and Ron Albrecht, which will be included on Dr. Camwell’s forthcoming CD in 2012. In August, 2012, Helton both presented and performed on the evening gala concert as a distinguished student honoring former teacher Betty Mather at the National Flute Convention in Las Vegas, 2012. Ms. Helton performs regularly with the prestigious Des Moines Mozaiques Chamber Ensembles, for Salisbury House Chamber Music Series, Nielsen Concert Series, and Brenton Arboretum Series. She was also artist-in-residence at the Aberystwyth Music Festival in Wales.
Dr. Helton coordinated of 2002 Iowa Flute Festival at Grinnell College and is invited to perform, present classes and lectures annually for the festival. Ms. Helton maintains a large private studio in Des Moines, IA. She received her B.M. in Flute Performance at Brigham Young University, M. M. at Drake University, and D.M.A. at the University of Iowa as recipient of the Performance Fellowship. Teachers include Susan Goodfellow, Betty Mather, Anita Miller-Reider and Tadeu Coelho.
