After teaching kindergarten for several years and working my way through graduate school, Simpson College became my new classroom in 2007. I have taught classes focusing on educational literacy primarily at the elementary level. Some courses include Assessment and Diagnosis of Reading Difficulties, Language and Communication, Content Area Reading and Writing, and Children’s Literature. I have spent the last four May terms focusing on Classroom Management, which is always a fun and lively class experience! In every class I teach my passion for education and student learning comes through. One of the most important goals that I stress in each class is that teachers make the difference! We can make a topic come alive, create activities that are fun and engaging, and help generate life-long learners.
My research focuses on a variety of teaching topics. I am very interested in identity development in pre-service and in-service teachers. By looking at how a teacher develops their identity we can help at the college level to create experiences so our students can examine their professional identity and help make meaning from those experiences. I am also interested in how technology will impact learning overall. What motivational, academic, social, and emotional benefits or drawbacks are associated with the advancement of technology across the country as well as the world? These are topics that I frequently present on at conferences across the country. This year I will be presenting my work on identity development in student teachers at the International Reading Association in San Antonio, TX.
I live with my husband, Josh (Simpson graduate!), and two daughters, Mia and Maci right here in Indianola. I enjoy teaching religious education, leading Campfire USA girls, reading, taking my daughters to soccer, gymnastic, dance, etc…etc…etc…and sitting outside enjoying the weather with friends and family. Since we live so close to campus, we get to attend athletic games, concerts, as well as the many other events that Simpson has to offer!
