Hola! My name is Mark Bates, Professor of Spanish here in the World Language and Culture Studies Department. I have been at Simpson since 1997. I have a love for Latin America. I have studied in Mexico, having taken numerous trips there with students. My heart beats in Nicaragua and Central America, destinations for over 15 trips over the years, my most recent in June and July of 2015.  I just got back from directing the Simpson Experience Abroad in Argentina this Spring 2016. I  published a book in 2014 called With Arms Wide Open, a collection of short stories detailing my experiences in Nicaragua. I am currently working on a second book, Chickens in the Hallway. I have also traveled six times to Brazil. I speak Portuguese and teach an introductory course that forms part of Nate's Pics 017our Latin America Studies Minor. I have a deep passion about issues of poverty, globalization, immigration, social justice, and cultural understanding.
