Hola! My name is Mark Bates, professor of Spanish here in the World Language and Culture Studies Department. I have been at Simpson since 1997. I have a passion for Latin America. I have studied in Mexico, having taken numerous trips there with students. My heart beats in Nicaragua and Central America, destinations for over 15 trips over the years. I am publishing a book in 2014 called With Arms WIde Open, a collection of short stories detailing my experiences there. I have also travelled five times to Brazil. I speak Portuguese and teach an introductory course that forms part of Nate's Pics 017our Latin America Studies Minor. I have a deep concern about issues of poverty, globalization, immigration, social justice, and cultural understanding.
