I grew up in South Africa, where I obtained my undergraduate degree, and then came to the USA. I received my PhD in Computer Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, working in machine learning. After graduate school I moved to the New York area and worked as a researcher in computer science for IBM.
I joined Simpson in Fall 2008, and live in Indianola with my wife and six-year-old daughter. My most enjoyable hobby is making outrageous statements about the future and seeing if people think I’m crazy. However it is not true that I give an A to any student who can beat me at chess.
My favorite class to teach at the moment is the second semester programming class.
Outstanding books I have read recently:
- The Better Angels of Our Nature: Why Violence Has Declined, by Steven Pinker
- Republic, Lost: How Money Corrupts Congress – and a Plan to Stop it, by Lawrence Lessig
