High School Choral Invitational

ABOUT THE SIMPSON COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL CHORAL INVITATIONAL

Music at Simpson’s High School Choral Invitational is a full day of musical enrichment created to help you attain the highest level of artistry and focus with your choir. The Invitational provides a supportive forum for 4-6 invited high school choirs to share choral music with one another and receive feedback from three expert choral clinicians. Choirs are asked to bring three prepared pieces from their current repertoire. Throughout the day, the clinicians will provide advice for improving the performance of the prepared pieces as well as overarching choral concepts. Singers also observe the other choirs in a workshop environment in order to observe and reflect on these changes as they occur. The choir directors will choose a piece to perform at the opening “get to know you” mini-concert.  During each clinic session, the clinician will work on one, two or all three pieces at his or her discretion. All three pieces will receive clinic time during the day. The clinicians, in collaboration with the conductor, will choose one piece for the closing session that best demonstrates the ensemble’s development throughout the day.

Who’s Eligible to Attend: Attendance is by invitation only.  If you would like more information, please don’t hesitate to contact Tim McMillin, Director of Choral Studies at Simpson College.

Cost:  There is no cost or registration fee for this event.

Where: Registration is at the Amy Robertson Music Center on the Simpson College Campus, Indianola, IA. All choirs will sing in the College’s Lekberg Hall, Great Hall, and Smith Memorial Chapel during the day.

Time: The Invitational is from 9:00  a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Attire: Choir participants should wear comfortable attire during the day. Formal concert attire is NOT necessary.

Note about memorization: In order for the day to be most useful, choirs should arrive with music as close to “performance ready” as possible.  If your choir generally performs from memory, then the pieces should be as memorized as possible.  However, it is absolutely appropriate for singers to bring music along for the clinic sessions if you feel your choir will respond better to instruction and suggestion with the score in front of them.
