Accounting is one of the largest majors offered at Simpson College. As an accounting major, students have the opportunity to work with an accounting faculty comprised of Certified Public Accountants who have extensive real-world experience as accounting practitioners. With evening and weekend classes offered on three area campuses, working adults are able to earn an accounting degree in a convenient setting without sacrificing quality.
At Simpson College, we focus on developing professionals who have the ability to apply their accounting knowledge to a variety of business situations. Courses in financial accounting, cost accounting, tax, and auditing allow students to develop the skills necessary to succeed in the accounting profession.
Simpson College requires students to complete at least 128 semester hours of coursework prior to graduation. Students who graduate with a major in Accounting may apply to take the Certified Public Accounting (CPA) exam in Iowa. Upon acceptance, students may sit for the CPA exam; however, students who pass the Iowa exam must have accumulated a total of 150 semester hours of college credit and public accounting experience before they will be awarded a CPA certificate. This requirement exceeds the Simpson College graduation requirements for Accounting majors by 22 hours. Students may complete the 150 hours in four years at Simpson, in more than four years at Simpson, or in a master’s program at another institution. Students age 25 and above may use the Life Experience Portfolio process to help satisfy this requirement. The department has completed articulation agreements with other institutions to ease the transfer process and reduce graduate level requirements. Simpson College's Division of Adult Learning teaching staff were all very knowledgeable and experienced in their subject areas. Each professor was eager to provide examples and scenarios of practical, real world situations, all of which come in very handy on the job. And speaking of jobs, I landed an accounting position with a large Des Moines non-profit company before I had even finished all my classes. Simpson College has allowed me to better myself and better my professional career by allowing me the freedom to pursue an accounting degree at a pace that fit my schedule.

My Simpson degree has allowed me to gain access to the Finance Department at Allied…I have a sales background, but my Simpson accounting degree gave me the opportunity to try something new…This job has been a really good experience…It's been a challenge but so far I'm really enjoying it. Now that I have graduated, I am going to start reviewing for the CPA exam.
