English

Work in the Department of English includes courses in literature and in expository and creative writing. All courses, whether focused on a genre, author, period or socio-cultural perspective, have as their underlying purpose to help students develop the sensitivity to language, form, and ideas that provide both for understanding and enjoyment of literature and for quality in their own writing. Majors acquire a general acquaintance with the traditions of English and American literature, and are encouraged to explore in greater detail those writers, periods and topics that best meet their individual needs and interests.
