Debate team wins Big Apple Tournament
Simpson College wins first team championship of 2020-21
The Simpson College (simpson.edu) debate team won the virtual Queens College Big Apple Tournament on Sept. 27, crowning two individual champions in Scott Krueger and Andrew Flory.
Krueger and Flory finished as co-champions in the Lincoln–Douglas debate category. The pair also shared top speaker honors, helping Simpson capture the overall team title over Murray State and Grove City College.
“This was the first tournament where we had several students competing,” said Spencer Waugh, director of speech, debate and mock trial. “The team has been working hard during the first month of practice and I am pleased with their performances. They also learned so much from engaging in academic debates with students across the country.”
In addition to a team win in Lincoln–Douglas debate, Simpson took second in the International Public Debate Association category and made it to the semifinal round in Parliamentary Debate. Top individual finishes included Mo Marks as a finalist in Varsity IPDA and Elise Sturgeon and Michael Roets as semifinalists in Parliamentary Debate.
Simpson’s next competition is the Southwest Baptist University Derryberry Season Opener tournament Oct. 2-3.
