May Term

Each year, the department offers a variety of courses during May Term that allow faculty and students to explore subjects that fall outside the scope of traditional literature and writing courses.  Recent courses include the following:

  • Spoken Word and Music Collective
  • Reading and Writing the Short Poem
  • Introduction to Film
  • The Road Trip in American Literature
  • Transgender: Pop Culture
  • Shakespeare with Subtitles

Faculty in the department have also offered domestic and international travel courses during May Term, providing students with unique opportunities to study language, literature, and culture in diverse settings. Faculty members have led students to places such as China, Brazil, Germany, Poland, Greece, and Turkey. Some of the courses that have been offered in the recent past include the following:

  • Ethics of Globalization in Costa Rica
  • The Future of Europe
  • Travel Writing: An Exploration of Gastronomy in Omaha, Nebraska via Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives
  • Ireland: Place and Text
