The New Year is Fast Approaching

There seems to be consensus that the older we get, the faster the New Year comes. But the end of the year is a universal time when people spend some time in reflection and also in considering the potential that the next year holds. We write resolutions both serious and silly. This year, I resolve to make more time for my husband… By spending less time on Pinterest. Whatever the list ends up being, it becomes less important than the actual act of reflection; that pause as we consider all of the blessings we received and all of the challenges we overcame.

It is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to a dear friend this week. Robert (Bob) Crandall passed away December 9th, 2013. Bob was a beloved instructor of religious studies at Simpson College and was the recipient of the 2012 Excellence in Adult Education award.

When asked to share what qualities set Bob apart from other instructors, the student who nominated him shared that Bob, “cared about how you were doing; not just in his class but in all of our classes and in general. He cared about how we did, because we are people.” He is an active member of the College and the Evening & Weekend program. Bob displays a deep commitment to education; not only in the courses that build our minds, but also in the community we have the builds our sense of together-ness.  His joy of teaching and love for his students comes through in this touching video clip he made when he received the Excellence in Adult Education award:
