Dr. Jay K. Simmons is the 23rd president of Simpson College. He served previously as president of Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant, where he helped restructure enrollment, advancement and the college’s educational programs. Under his tenure, the college met a $3 million annual matching grant challenge, reduced the discount rate and increased the ACT average for incoming students.
Before accepting the Iowa Wesleyan College position, Simmons served from 1997 to 2008 as vice president for academic affairs and dean at LaGrange College in Georgia. While there, he updated faculty governance, expanded curriculum and program activities and increased international programs.
Simmons has also served at Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland, Ohio, where he was Dean of Liberal Arts, and at his alma mater, Birmingham-Southern College, where he was assistant to the dean and later assistant dean.
Simmons, a native of Muscle Shoals, Alabama, holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Birmingham-Southern College, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa. He holds Master’s and Doctorate degrees in political science from the University of Alabama.
He and his wife, Jenné, have two daughters, Samantha and Madison.
