Communicating with Parents

While students should be the ones communicating with their professors, occasionally concerned parents may contact a faculty member. Professors are encouraged to listen to parents’ concerns with respect and consideration, but privacy policies and regulations such as FERPA restrict the information that a professor can share. For grading questions, professors should refer the parent to the registrar’s office. For residential and extracurricular concerns, the Dean of Students should be the parent’s contact.

FERPA information and Simpson’s particular privacy policies are found here. Questions regarding FERPA, Simpson College policy or parental access to student education records can be addressed to Jody Ragan, Registrar, at 515-961-1517 or jody.ragan@simpson.edu.
