Simpson College has hosted an honor band for 7th and 8th grade students for more than twenty-five years. This festival allows students from many schools to come together and work with exciting guest conductors. Typically over fifty schools participate. The event occurs in January and students perform in the newly renovated Pote Theatre in the Blank Performing Arts Center.
This year’s festival will be held on Tuesday, January 20, 2015. The guest conductors for this year’s festival are Mr. Paul Bloomquist and Dr. Mark Doerffel. Paul is the Director of Bands at Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge. Paul holds an M.A. degree from Southern Oregon University through the American Band College in Ashland, Oregon and a B.M. degree from Simpson College where he graduated Magna Cum Laude. (Orpheus festival was Paul’s first honor band experience). Mark Doerffel received his Bachelor of Music Education from Louisiana State University and his Master of Music Education from Appalachian State University. He received a Ph.D. in Music Education from the University of Florida. He is presently the Director of Instrumental Activities at Grand View University in Des Moines, Iowa.
