New Simpson Web Site

If you haven’t had a chance to log on to www.simpson.edu lately, you’ll have a nice surprise waiting. On August 1, Simpson debuted its new web site, complete with many new components and innovative features, that will engage users and make navigating the site easier. A few of the things that make the new site distinctive include:

  • Interactive interest survey – Designed for prospective students to see if Simpson has what they are looking for, this tool creates a customized results page for everyone who makes an inquirywhich can be saved and shared with parents and friends.
  • Responsive design – This allows the content of the page to automatically adapt to whatever screen you are using – computer, tablet, smart phone, etc.
  • Upgraded and interactive events calendar – Keep up with all campus activities and also let others know via social media if you will be attending.
  • Success Stories – We have profiled several recent graduates and how their Simpson Experience helped them succeed during and after college. You can see them at http://simpson.edu/success-stories/ We would like to hear YOUR Simpson Success Story too. Please send us your story!

Trustees and Board Appointments

Jay R. Byers has been named to the Simpson College board of trustee as a member of the Class of 2015. Jay graduated from Simpson in 1993 with a bachelor of arts degree in political science and earned his juris doctorate in 1996 from the University of Iowa.

Currently, Jay is the Chief Executive Officer for the Greater Des Moines Partnership. He previously served as the Partnership’s Senior Vice President, Government Relations and Public Policy. Jay is a graduate of the Warren County Leadership Institute and was named to the ACCE “40 Under 40 Rising Stars of the Chamber World” in 2009 and the Des Moines Business Record’s “Forty Under 40” Class of 2006, as well as the Business Record’s “Forty Under 40 Alum of the Year” in 2012. He is a member of the Simpson College Alumni Association and of the Alpha Tau Omega National Fraternity.

A native of Northwest Iowa, Jay currently resides in Des Moines with his wife, Katie, and two daughters.

Jessica Braunschweig-Norris has also been named to serve as a Simpson College trustee as a member of the Class of 2015. Jessica graduated Summa Cum Laude from Simpson in 2003 with a bachelor of arts degree in communication and marketing. She attended Drake Law School where she received her MBA with honors in 2006.

She is employed at the General Council at Iowa Property Assessment where she serves as Administrator of the Iowa Property Assessment Board of Appeal.

Jessica and her husband Michael, a 2002 Simpson graduate, have three children and reside in Altoona.

Mark Roberts has been named President of the Simpson Alumni Association and will serve a two-year term on the board of trustees as an ex-officio member. Mark, the director of alliance management at Principal Financial Group is a 1989 graduate of Simpson College with a degree in economics and finance.

Roberts was a four-year letter winner in football while at Simpson and currently is an assistant football coach at Woodward-Granger high school. He also served on the Woodward-Granger school board for seven years.

Mark and his wife Laura live in Woodward, Iowa and they have two children.

Fall Lectures at Simpson

Dr. Anatanand Rambachan will give the Matthew Simpson Lecture this fall The Matthew Simpson Lecture, honoring the college’s namesake, will be held September 20 and will feature Dr. Anatanand Rambachan (pictured left), professor at St. Olaf College. Rambachan is author of several books on interreligious issues and he delivered the invocation address at the historic White House Celebration of the Hindu festival of Diwali in 2003 and also in 2004. The topic of his lecture will be “Interreligious Dialogue as Friendship: Mahatma Gandhi and C.F. Andrews.” The event will be held at 7 pm in Lekberg Hall on the Simpson College campus. The event is free and open to the public.

The McBride Lecture, named in honor of Simpson’s 19th president, Robert E. McBride, will take place on Wednesday, October 3 at 1 pm in Smith Chapel. The lecture will feature Journalist Charles Fishman, author of ‘The Big Thirst: The Secret Life and Turbulent Future of Water.” Fishman is also the author of the New York Times best seller, “The Wal-Mart Effect.” The lecture is free and open to the public.

John C. Culver Public Policy Center

The Culver Public Policy Center on the Simpson campus is expecting a busy 2012-13 academic year. We have have 12 Culver Fellows this year who are involved in every aspect of the center. Several have been working for candidates or political parties, including:

  • Dillon Thiner is one of two pages from the state of Iowa working for the Iowa Democratic Party at the Democratic National Convention.
  • Annie Olson was a Fellow for the Obama campaign.
  • Kyle Hauswirth was an intern on the Tom Latham campaign.
  • Steffi Lee worked for a California congressional race.
  • Mackenzie Bills worked for an Iowa congressional race.

Director of Alumni Relations Named

Simpson is pleased to announce that Erin Heeren has been appointed as the Director of Alumni Relations.  Her first day will be September 26. Erin currently works for Des Moines University as the Assistant Director of Alumni Relations where she has worked for the past two years.  Prior to working for DMU Erin worked for the Special Olympics for five years as the Director of Special Events.  A 2005 graduate of Iowa State University, Erin has been involved with alumni activities, event planning and fundraising throughout the last several years.

We hope you will have the opportunity to meet Erin at an upcoming alumni function or during your next visit to campus.

Team Simpson on RAGBRAI

Team Simpson on RAGBRAI 2012 Surviving heat, hills and even an overnight hail storm, Team Simpson endured one of the most challenging RAGBRAIs in recent years this summer. The 52 team members, representing 12 states and an age range of between 19 and 68, kept on despite daily temperatures reaching more than 100 degrees. Read a daily account of their adventures.

It’s time to unleash your Simpson Spirit, Dog-gone it!

Now even your best friend can support Simpson. Leashes are available for $15 each and can be ordered by contacting Pam Zimmerman or by downloading and sending in the leash order form.
