Class of 2011
Chad Onstot: Chad double-majored in Mathematics and Economics while at Simpson College and won the Trustees Award for having the highest grade point average and most quality points of the graduating class. Chad also won the award for Outstanding Senior Economics Major and the Jordan Science Award for Outstanding Science Major who excelled in the Humanities. Chad passed four Actuarial Exams while at Simpson College and interned as an Actuarial Assistant for Nationwide Insurance and AEGON USA. Chad started working for Allianz in Minneapolis as an Actuarial Associate in June.
Alonzo Barkley: Alonzo double-majored in Honors Mathematics and Physics while at Simpson College. Alonzo spent his last semester at Simpson College studying abroad in Thailand. This allowed him to apply his honors research models to the shrimp farming industry in Thailand. Currently, Alonzo is planning on earning his Masters in Actuarial Science at the University of Iowa.
Kiersten Ruff: Kiersten double majored in Honors Mathematics & Physics while at Simpson College and was named the Outstanding Graduating Senior in Mathematics. For her honors research project, Kiersten looked at the application of graph theory concepts to the development of a models for infectious diseases. This fall Kiersten will start her PhD work in Computational Biology with full funding at Washington University at St Louis.
Katrina Housholder: Katrina double majored in Mathematics & Sociology while at Simpson College. Katrina has been accepted to the AmeriCorps program in Denver and will consider graduate school options after the completion of her assignment.
Michelle Lingsheit: Michelle double majored in Honors Mathematics & Chemistry while at Simpson College. For her honors research project, Michelle looked at the mathematics behind the Atomic Force Microscope that the Chemistry Department uses for nanoscience research. This fall Michelle will start her graduate studies in Material Science at Iowa State University.
Molly Peterson: Molly double majored in Honors Mathematics and Philosophy while at Simpson College. Molly was instrumental in the construction and development of the Differential Analyzer which was the precursor to the modern day computer and made it the focus of her honors research project. Molly has been accepted to the AmeriCorps program in Seattle and will consider graduate school options after the completion of her assignment.
Jennifer Griffiths: Jennifer majored in Honors Mathematics and Minored in Biology while at Simpson College. For her honors research, Jennifer looked at statistical models and software with applications geared towards Biology. This fall Jennifer will start her graduate studies in Biostatistics at the University of Iowa.
Jessica Keeton: Jessica double majored in Honors Mathematics and Computer Science while at Simpson College. For her honors research, Jessica looked at and tested models for assigning rooms and times for the administration of final exams for a college. Jessica was accepted into the Peace Corps program in sub-Saharan Africa and will consider graduate school options after the completion of her assignment.
Brad Diersen: Brad double majored in Mathematics & Computer Science while at Simpson College. Brad accepted a position with SHAZAM in Des Moines and will start his duties in early June.
Sheila Zander: Sheila majored in Mathematics while at Simpson College and interned with Wells Fargo during her senior year. Sheila’s internship evolved into a full time offer with Wells Fargo and she started her duties immediately following graduation.
Brett Smithart: Brett double majored in Mathematics & Computer Science while at Simpson College. Brett had an internship with the United States Government throughout his senior year of college. Brett’s internship evolved into a full-time offer and he started is work with the government immediately following graduation.
Zach Haugland: Zach majored in Mathematics & Secondary Education while at Simpson College. This fall Zach will start his teaching career in mathematics at the middle school in the Fort Dodge School District.
Jaclyn Westphal: Jaclyn majored in Mathematics while at Simpson College. Jaclyn accepted a position with the Navy in their Nuclear Engineering Program and will start her duties in the fall.
Class of 2010
Andrew Dau: Andrew double majored in Honors Mathematics and Computer Science and participated in basketball while at Simpson College. Andrew turned an internship with the National Agricultural Statistics Service Field Office in Des Moines into full-time employment. Andrew now works at the NASS field office in Madison, Wisconsin and has started working on a Master’s in Statistics at the University of Wisconsin. This past year he produced a number of farm related reports for the state of Wisconsin among them including the Farm Labor & Livestock Slaughter Reports.
Bobbie Pogge: Bobbie double majored in Mathematics and Accounting while at Simpson College. Bobbie interned her senior year at Peoples Bank in Indianola which led to full time employment. Bobbie was recently promoted and her new title is Junior Auditor of Compliance. In this position, Bobbie will be performing regular audits of the bank’s operation to make sure the bank stays in compliance.
Andi Werger: Andi majored in Mathematics and Secondary Education while at Simpson College. Andi participated in the Capitol Hill Internship Program fall semester her senior year interning at the NASS national office in Washington D.C. Andi has moved from her mathematics teaching position at Council Bluffs Lewis Central to be closer to home and will start teaching mathematics at Stillwell Junior High School is West Des Moines this fall.
Eric Smith: Eric double majored in Honors Mathematics and Economics while at Simpson College. Eric’s Honors research project focused on Financial Mathematics. Eric interned two summers for the Principal Financial Group in Des Moines as an Actuary and now is employed as an Actuary for Nationwide Insurance in Des Moines. Eric was recently named to the Recruiting Committee at Nationwide and has been an instrumental at informing students about internships and full time employment opportunities.
Jeremy Ward: Jeremy double majored in Honors Mathematics and Physics and participated in soccer while at Simpson College. Jeremy’s Honors research project was entitled “Modeling an Atomic Rb System Using Density Marices”. Jeremy will be starting his second year of graduate school in Physics at Wake Forest University in the fall.
Bryce Klinker: Bryce double majored in Mathematics and Computer Science while at Simpson College. Bryce works for Pioneer Hybrid in Des Moines and was recently promoted to Senior Software Developer and is currently working on a Master’s in Computer Science through the University of Denver. In his new position, Bryce will continue being responsible for maintaining, enhancing, and developing applications and will now also have the opportunity to be the leader on projects.
Nick White: Nick majored in Mathematics and participated in soccer while at Simpson College. Nick will be working on a Master’s in Mathematics Education at the University of Iowa.
Heather Scott: Heather majored in Mathematics and Secondary Education while at Simpson College. Heather also served as a Mathematics Undergraduate Assistant for the department two years running discussion sessions for our Quantitative Reasoning class. Heather will be moving closer to her hometown to start her new teaching position in mathematics for the Cascade School District in east central Iowa..
Erin Vinnedge: Erin double majored in Honors Mathematics and Economics at Simpson College. Erin’s honors research project was in Financial Mathematics. Erin will start studying Law at the University of Montana this fall. Erin is considering studying corporate law with a focus on compliance.
Class of 2009
Jason Crawford: Jason majored in Mathematics and Secondary Education while at Simpson College. Jason is teaching high school mathematics and coaching in the Albia Community School District.
Curt Bjork: Curt majored in Mathematics and played baseball for four years while at Simpson College. Curt will be finishing the Master’s program in Sports Administration at Colorado State University and recently accepted a sport’s administrative position at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Kendra Frush: Kendra double majored in Honors Mathematics and Biology while at Simpson College. Kendra modeled the spread of AIDS for her Honors Mathematics research project. Kendra will be starting her third year of medical school at the University of Iowa.
Raena Gordon: Raena majored in Mathematics and minored in Computer Science and Music while at Simpson College. Raena is currently employed at MidAmerican Energy as an Electric Scheduler in the Unregulated Retail Service Department. Raena uses regression models to forecast load and consumption.
Tracy Robson: Tracy double majored in Honors Mathematics and Secondary Education, and Spanish while at Simpson College. Tracy applied topological concepts in modeling the process of recombination in DNA for her Honors research project. Tracy is currently substitute teaching and working at the Iowa Homeless Youth Centers Street Outreach while considering graduate school options.
Robert Best: Robert double majored in Honors Mathematics and Secondary Education, and Spanish and participated in football and track while at Simpson College. Robert is teaching mathematics and coaching at Lincoln High School in Des Moines, Iowa.
Dillon McKelvey: Dillon double majored in Mathematics and Economics and participated in football while at Simpson College. Dillon interned as an Actuary Assistant at the Sammons Annuity Group his senior year and is currently finishing his first year as an actuary at their main office in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Emily Lundt: Emily double majored in Mathematics and Biology while at Simpson College. Emily spent the fall semester of her senior year in the Budapest Semester in Mathematics program. Emily also studied two summers in the Summer Institute in Biostatistics at the University of Wisconsin. Emily will be finishing her Master’s in Biostatistics at the University of Iowa.
Suzy Schnell: Suzy double majored in Mathematics and Physics while at Simpson College. Suzy is currently working on a Masters in Engineering at Iowa State University. This summer Suzy is a Materials Engineering Intern with Wellman Dynamics.
Class of 2008
Ashley Hopp: Ashley double majored in Economics and Mathematics while at Simpson College. Ashley interned two summers at the NASS field office in Des Moines which led to fulltime employment at the field office in Springfield, Illinois after graduation. Ashley recently accepted a new position with AEGON in Cedar Rapids as a Senior Actuarial Technician and will start taking the actuarial exams.
Casie Schmitt: Casie double majored in Physics and Mathematics while at Simpson College. Casie attended an REU in Physics at the University of Oklahoma and was honored as the Outstanding Senior in Mathematics. Casie dhas been employed at the NASS field office in Fargo, North Dakota since graduation.
Danielle Shelley: Danielle majored in Mathematics and Secondary Education while at Simpson College. While at Simpson College, Danielle spent a semester studying abroad in Australia and gave a presentation on her research project at the Iowa Council for Teachers of Mathematics Annual Meeting. Danielle is teaching 8th grade Mathematics in the Winterset Community School District. Danielle along with three of her former math students that are now in high school will participate this summer in “Modeling of Mathematical Minds”, a workshop hosted by the Simpson College Mathematics Department that will prepare the students for the High School Mathematical Competition in Modeling (HiMCM).
John Kerr: John majored in Mathematics and Secondary Education while at Simpson College. John is teaching high school mathematics in the Farragut Community School District.
Nick Hay: Nick majored in Mathematics and minored in Political Science while at Simpson College. Nick will be starting his third year of law school at Drake University.
Nick Bruhn: Nick majored in Mathematics and was a four year member of the football team while at Simpson College. Nick is currently a Service Representative with the Social Security Agency in Des Moines, Iowa.
Class of 2007
Scott Bonz: Scott double majored in History and Mathematics while at Simpson College. Scott is currently employed by The Principal Financial Group in Des Moines as an Assistant Actuarial Analyst.
Jean Clipperton: Jean triple majored in Honors Mathematics, Spanish and Philosophy while at Simpson College. Jean was chosen as the Outstanding Senior Major for each department as won the Jordan Award for the outstanding graduate in Humanities at the spring Honors Convocation. Jean was very active in the mathematics program participating in undergraduate research, the Mathematical Contest in Modeling, and presenting results at undergraduate research conferences. As part of the Honors in Mathematics major, Jean continued her summer REU research in Graph Labelings and currently has two papers that will be submitted for publication. Jean earned an NSF Graduate Fellowship that will pay her $90,000 over her first three years of graduate school. Jean will be starting her third year of graduate school at the University of Michigan in the Modeling Program in Political Science.
Natalie Chizek: Natalie majored in Mathematics and minored in Management. Natalie was a member of the women’s soccer team at Simpson College and is a past winner of the team MVP award. Natalie is currently employed at Nationwide Insurance as a Pricing Analyst.
Laura Preston: Laura double majored in Mathematics and Accounting and worked for two years with the accounting firm Ernst and Young in Des Moines. Laura will be starting her third year in the PhD program in Applied Mathematics at Washington State University.
Alicia Uhde : Alicia majored in Mathematics and is employed with the insurance company ING in Des Moines. Alicia was a member of the Simpson softball team. Alicia’s title is Brokerage Operations Coordinator where she establishes different investment accounts for ING clients.
Class of 2006
Shikha Basnet: Shikha majored in Economics, won the Outstanding Senior in Mathematics award, and was the first student to graduate from Simpson College with the Honors in Mathematics major. Shikha’s Honors Thesis was entitled; “Monopolist Strategies in a Durable Goods Market.” Shikha was a member of three teams that earned the award of Meritorious in the Mathematical Contest in Modeling and presented three times at the Midwest Undergraduate Mathematics Symposium. Shikha successfully completed her Ph.D. program in Economics at The University of Pittsburgh this spring and was hired as an Quantitative Research Associate on the Oceans Beyond Piracy Project at One Earth Future. OEF is a nonprofit, nongovernmental Foundation whose goal is to develop effective systems for governance to achieve a world beyond war.
Robert Delsing: Robert double majored in Mathematics and English and participated in track while at Simpson College. Robert earned a Masters in Actuary Science at the University of Iowa. Robert recently completed all the Society of Actuary Exams and has been working as an actuary at AEGON in Cedar Rapids since completing his Masters degree.
Chase Richardson: Chase majored in Mathematics and minored in both Economics and Physics. Chase is currently employed at Nationwide Insurance as a Senior Product Analyst. Chase has volunteered his services in meeting with our current students to talk about his career at Nationwide on numerous occasions and has become a valuable contact for students looking for internships and full time employment opportunities at Nationwide.
Angela Servais: Angela majored in Mathematics and minored in Communications. Angela participated in women’s basketball and was heavily involved with the Sports Information Department while at Simpson College. Angela earned her MBA at Drake University and is currently employed at SHAZAM in Des Moines and has the title Market Research Analyst.
