SC 101 – This Will Change Everything
Will developments in technology over the next 20 – 30 years “change everything” — i.e. completely transform human society? For example, is it really possible that we might be able to “back-up” our brains in electronic format, and thereby live “forever”? If it becomes possible, would we want to do so?
In this class, we will investigate current trends in technology and consider what developments are likely to occur in the foreseeable future. We will discuss artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, genetic engineering, and other ideas that may have a transformative effect on human society. Whether you are worried or excited about the future, this class will provide a singularly interesting experience.
Meet Your Professor
Associate Professor of Computer Science
I grew up in South Africa, where I obtained my undergraduate degree, and then came to the USA. I received my PhD in Computer Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, working in machine learning. After graduate school I moved to the New York area and worked as a researcher in computer science for IBM.
I joined Simpson in Fall 2008, and live in Indianola with my wife and nine-year-old daughter. My most enjoyable hobby is making outrageous statements about the future and seeing if people think I’m crazy. However it is not true that I give an A to any student who can beat me at chess.
My favorite class to teach at the moment is the second semester programming class.
Outstanding books I have read recently:
- The Better Angels of Our Nature: Why Violence Has Declined, by Steven Pinker
- Republic, Lost: How Money Corrupts Congress – and a Plan to Stop it, by Lawrence Lessig
If you have any questions about Computer Science at Simpson, feel free to contact me, or see our website below.
Meet Your SC Leader
Hello everyone! My name is Trey Thompson and I will be the SC Leader for Dr. Mark Brodie’s SC 101 “This Will Change Everything” class. I will be a junior during the 2017-2018 school year, majoring in mathematics and a minor in secondary education with an endorsement in coaching. My goal is to become a high school math teacher and a cross country/track and field coach.
I am from small town called Ogden, Iowa and attended Ogden High School. Ogden is located about an hour northwest of Simpson. At Ogden, I was involved in cross country, basketball, track, choir, and National Honor Society. I was also the student body treasurer as a senior.
I am on the cross country team and also track and field. I am a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), Festival of Short Plays, and participated in intramurals. I have traveled to Paris for May Term my freshman year and it was a lot of fun! When I am not running around Indianola, I like to play board games with friends and family, sleep, watch sports, cheering on the Cyclones, and attend campus bingo and trivia (even though I never win).
I am very excited to meet all of you and be your SC Leader! If you have any questions or need to contact me, feel free to email me through my school email: firstname.lastname@example.org. I am also on Facebook and all sorts of other social medias. I am looking forward to meeting all of you at registration and having a fun first semester!
