Simpson College’s debate team beat out three other schools to capture the Sweepstakes Award in the recent Butler Bulldog Battle at Butler University.
Simpson defeated Butler, Ohio University and Webster University to claim the top prize. In addition, freshman Jacy Gomez was awarded the Top Speaker award at the tournament.
“We took a very young team of mostly freshmen, and they performed very well,” said Spencer Waugh, the debate coach. “Alex Severn was the only student with college debate experience.
“It is very exciting to be working with these talented students!”
After the preliminary rounds, Gomez and Julius Foster were the top seed, MacKenzie Bills and Steffi Lee were the third seed and Paul Safford and Alex Severn were the fifth seed.
In the final round, Gomez and Foster lost to the Ohio University team in a 2-1 decision.
The Simpson debate team has been preparing for the event since Jan. 5, when the topic was announced: A U.S. federal ban on assault weapons is justified.
The team next competes this weekend at Webster University in St. Louis.
Simpson College is currently the only college in Iowa and one of the first colleges in the nation to offer public forum debate.
