What a successful weekend it was for Simpson debaters Jacy Gomez and Ethan Fredrick at a three-day tournament sponsored by Webster University in St. Louis.
They were undefeated – 7-0 – in winning the Public Forum Debate Division.
Then Gomez was recognized as Top Speaker and Frederick named Second Speaker in the Parliamentary Debate division. Gomez received a standing ovation from the crowd for her performance.
Their efforts helped propel the Simpson College Speech & Debate team to 7th place out of 45 in overall team points.
The tournament – dubbed the Gorlok Gala – was held Jan. 24-26.
“It was a fantastic weekend,” said Spencer Waugh, the Simpson speech and debate coach. “All 11 students contributed to help the college place seventh, often against much larger universities.”
In addition to Gomez/Fredrick, the Simpson teams of Jacob McLain-Paul Safford and Alex Severn-Nate Connealy finished the preliminary rounds with enough wins to advance to the quarterfinal round.
Other students who contributed to top the overall team total were Marissa Belau, Dana Bohan, Tegan Jarchow and Jordan Rude.
This is the first year that Simpson has fielded a speech team, and Ellen Keyser received an Excellence award in Impromptu.
