It wasn’t the storybook ending they had hoped for, but the members of Simpson’s rugby team recently completed an enormously successful first season.
The good news: The team finished in the top four of the nation.
In the semifinal game, Simpson lost, 29-0, to a very strong Occidental College team that went on to beat North Florida in the final, 28-15.
Occidental “proved to have too many offensive threats and superb defense,” said Simpson head coach Jake Norlin.
Simpson’s Ben Borland was named to the All-Tournament Team and was selected by the USAS Collegiate All-American Sevens Coach Tony Pacheco.
This marks the first year that Simpson has fielded a rugby team since the 1990s. The team earned one of eight spots in the inaugural NSCRO Small College Rugby 7s National Championship in Philadelphia.
Considering that only one of Simpson’s players had ever played rugby before, a top four finish is even more impressive.
