Simpson Mourns Death of James H. Kent, 89

The Simpson College community has lost a member of the family.

James H. Kent, 89, of Muscatine, passed away on Oct. 29. Although not a Simpson graduate, Kent’s devotion to the college was evident through his 33 years of service on the board of trustees (he was named an honorary member in 2006), and by the generous financial gift his family made for the construction of the Kent Campus Center.

Kent attended the dedication of the center that bears his family’s name during Homecoming weekend on Oct. 19, and his appearance was greeted by a warm and prolonged standing ovation.

“I am so grateful that Jim was here to see the impact he has had on Simpson College, and to hear how grateful and appreciative we are for his leadership,” said John W. Byrd, Simpson’s president. “Future generations of students will benefit greatly from his generosity. All of us extend our thoughts and prayers to his family.”
