The Simpson men’s 4×400-meter relay team is on a quick path toward qualifying for the outdoor nationals.
The team finished second to Division I Drake at the 2017 Jim Duncan Invitational in Des Moines, but in the process posted the nation’s top time in Division III.
The team of Chase Wetterling (Melcher, Iowa), Travis Tupper (Silver City, Iowa), Matt Pearson (Des Moines) and Jordan Coughenour (Maxwell, Iowa) finished the race in 3:15.58, the fastest time in the nation to this point in the season.
The Storm are hoping to make a repeat appearance at nationals after earning All-America honors at the 2017 NCAA Indoor National Championships with a seventh-place finish. The quartet in that race was Wetterling, Tupper, Coughenour and Kirk Wicks.
In order to qualify for outdoor nationals, Simpson will need to have one of the top 16 times in the nation.
