Simpsonian Collects 10 Awards at Iowa Media Convention

Simpson College’s student newspaper, The Simpsonian, and its companion website won 10 awards for journalistic excellence this past weekend at the Iowa College Media Association convention in Des Moines.

The newspaper and website, TheSimpsonian.com, won first-place awards for the following:

  • Best News Photograph, for its coverage of last winter’s Polar Plunge.
  • Best Sports Story, for Kimberly Kurimski’s story, “Ellingson Runs Through the Hardships,” about cross country and track athlete Catie Ellingson’s performances in the shadow of her mother’s death from cancer.
  • Best Use of Social Media, for its enterprising uses of Twitter, Facebook and YouTube as tools for sourcing, reporting and writing.

The website also placed second in the Best Online Site category, and The Simpsonian placed second in Best Editorial Leadership Competition.
