Congratulations to Simpson College sophomore Steffi Lee, who has received a Mark of Excellence award from the Society of Professional Journalists.
Lee won the feature-writing award for her story, “Living the Life He’s Always Wanted,” which originally appeared in The Simpsonian campus newspaper in November 2013.
The story profiled Simpson senior Brett Stadtlander and his experiences as a transgender male.
The SPJ awards recognize the best print, broadcast and digital journalism at colleges and universities around the country.
“We’re producing some of the best student journalists in the Midwest and in the nation,” said Brian Steffen, chair of the Department of Communication & Media Studies at Simpson. “This award for Steffi shows that our students’ work is getting noticed well beyond the borders of our campus.”
Lee’s story competed with entries from Region 7, which includes student newspapers in Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska.
Lee now qualifies for the national Mark of Excellence competition, which includes 12 regions. National winners will be notified later this spring.
