Listed below is a list of psychology students spring internship placements. These students are participating in a variety of settings ranging from clinical, counseling, educational, business, or research. Inernships allow for students to develop skills such as interviewing, basic counseling techniques, personnel management, ethical decisions, psychological assessment and record keeping.

Brianna Chaplin

Internship location:  Polk Country Crisis & Advocacy Services- Provides assistance to victims of violent crimes

Responsibilities:

  • Shadow counselors/ advocates on calls of sexual assault & violent crimes
  • Support victims through legal processes
  • Observe crisis counseling
  • Attend meetings and STAP center appointments
  • Run front desk

Why did you chose this internship:  “I met one of the advocates a couple of years ago and was interested in what they do, so I knew I had to look into the organization for my practicum”

How will this internship prepare you for the future: “There was extensive training and certain qualifications I earned that I can add to my resume.  Also if I apply with the county, it is good experience to have a county based internship”

Kyrea Kass

Internship location: Youth Homes of Mid-America- A nonprofit that helps boys cope with a wide range of emotional, behavioral, and educational difficulties.

Responsibilities:

  • Supervise youth
  • Help run group sessions
  • Work on daily paperwork for point systems, consequences, and hygiene
  • Participate in activities with the youth both on and off of campus

Why did you chose this internship: “It is paid and it [involves] working with young boys some of which came from the juvenile courts, so that ties in with my Criminal Justice major”

How will this internship prepare you for the future: “It gets me some experience in the field as well as helping me decide if this is the area I want to go in or go a different direction. I am also a staff member so I’ve gone through [essential] trainings like CPR and mandatory reporting”

Emily Scholl

Internship location: Orchard Place- A nonprofit that provides outpatient, in patient and community based mental health services for children

Why did you chose this internship: “I want to work with kids in the future… Orchard Place is a campus for kids with mental illnesses to go to learn how to cope with their day to day challenges”

Rebekah Kroese

Internship location: HOPE Agency- A nonprofit that incorporates ideas and concepts that increase the quality of life for both children and adults with special needs and their families.

Robert King

Internship location:  Crisis Intervention Services (CIS)- A nonprofit that provides support and empowerment to victims/survivors of domestic and dating violence, sexual assault, and/or violent crimes in Iowa counties

Brooke Gowin

Internship location: Broadlawn’s Medical Center- A care, community hospital, that offers several specialty clinics that serve medical, surgical, mental health, and primary health care needs of Polk County residents

  • Provide clients with information and resources
  • Shadow and assist the full time social worker at group homes.

Why did you chose this internship: “I am interested in mental health and social work so this [internship] was a good way to combine the two.”

How will this internship prepare you for the future: “I plan on getting my masters in social work, so working with a social worker helps prepare me for that course work.”

Sara Moore

Internship location: West Des Moines Police Department

Responsibilities:

  • Shadow law enforcement professionals including officer and detectives
  • Assist in evidence and suggest ways to improve organization and efficiency
  • Organize information for intelligence meetings

Why did you chose this internship: “I knew I wanted to work in law enforcement, however I was unsure about what specific job I was interested in. [This internship] allows me to see all aspects of the department and get advice for my goals”

How will this internship prepare you for the future:  “It is showing me what roles/ jobs I would like to pursue in the future. I am also making contacts with law enforcement and gaining applicable experience in my intended field.”

Mathew Wingerson

Internship location: Treatment Coordinator at Newton Correctional Facility

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in group therapy services for substance abuse within the prison
  • Use a cognitive-behavior approach to improve cognitive, social, emotional, and coping skills among offenders

Why did you chose this internship: “This is a unique population that very few individuals are able to work with. It gives me a different perspective on therapy and the field of psychology, a perspective I believe you cannot see anywhere else.”

How will this internship prepare you for the future: “Learning how to operate in a group therapy setting is critical in becoming a clinical psychologist. The professional development is also helpful in the form of physical presentation, ethical guidelines, and confidentiality.”

Casey Reisen

Internship location:  Jail Diversion Intern at Eyerly Ball Community Mental Health Services

  • Shadow case managers
  • Evaluate mental health status of clients
  • Set up social services while clients are incarcerated and once they are released

Responsibilities:

  • Set up interview times for applicants
  • Review resumes and applications
  • Conduct phone screens
  • Counsel applicants to find ideal job for them
  • Contact former employees and potential candidates about open positions

Why did you chose this internship:  “I originally wanted to go into the medical field but fell in love with psychology and human resources after job shadowing an HR position my freshman year. This internship fulfills my early aspirations for medicine but incorporates my new passion for HR”

Miranda Schultz

Internship location:  Central Iowa Shelter Services- A nonprofit that provides low barrier shelter, meals, and support services to adults experiencing homelessness

Morgan DeVorah 17′

Internship Location: Central Iowa Shelter and Services

Internship Responsibilities:My official title is Shelter Operations Intern. I have been given the responsibility of bettering the intake proccess of new clients to make these more aware of services provided by CISS. I am also there to help assist the Shelter Assistance Team. Additionally, I help promote services to clients and have been given another task to make the computer lab more efficient and resourceful.

Why did you choose this internship?

  • The spring break of my junior year, I went on an RLC Alternative Spring Break trip to New York that focused on the homeless population. I new after that that I wanted to work with individuals experiencing homelessness. I also know this internship was going to be challenging, but ultimately rewarding.

How will this internship prepare you for the future?

  • This internship will help me prepare to work with diverse individuals. It will teach me how to work in a team and to come up with solutions to different solutions. CISS will make me ready to work in a high demand and fast paced environment.

Lucy DeBisschop 17′

Internship Location: Genesis Development

Internship Responsibilities: Working with clients in the facility or at the different houses run by Genesis as well as possible desk jobs and “house keeping” responsibilities.

Why did you choose this internship?

  • This internship is vastly different from any other internship I’ve had before. I believe working with people with mental health is the field I want to go into.

How will this internship prepare you for the future?

  • It will give me a more broad view of the mental health field and working with people with different disabilities and differing severity.

Susan Alt 17′

Internship Location: U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI)

Internship Responsibilities: Serving as a case management intern. Learn about the refugee/immigrant process, assist the case manager with the resettlement side including the legal side, housing, jobs and schooling.

Why did you choose this internship?

  • I chose this internship because I have a passion for international relief and aid and emergency response. I have applied for an international disaster psych grad program. The internship seemed to fit my passions and interests and I wanted to learn more about the refugee/immigration process.

How will this internship prepare you for the future?

  • The internship will give me experience in my areas of interests/passion and this experience will help in my future career.

Jordan Williamson 17′

Internship Location: Indianola Middle School

Internship Responsibilities: Create Google documents for counselors, add new children into the system, meet with students on behavior plans discussing what they can do to improve behavior. I get to sit in when counselors work with students and provide input. I also help with A.R.T. and Success.

 Why did you choose this internship?

  • I chose this internship because I know I wanted to work with kids, and this gave me a feel for that.

How will this internship prepare you for the future?

  • It gives me an idea of what working with kids will be like and what situations might come up, and how to approach them.

Internship Location: Two Rivers Marketing

Internship Responsibilities: On-boarding or new associates, helping to coordinate agency events, helping with a new training system for associates.

Why did you choose this internship? 

  • I was at the agency last semester and fell in love with it. The culture of the agency is a very unique. I decided it would be in my best interest to stay at a place I really like.

How will this internship prepare you for the future?

  • I am getting a very good idea of what it’s like to be in an HR or agency coordinator role. They’ve given me opportunity to do a lot more than just scanning papers.

Internship Location: Youth Emergency Services and Shelter

Internship Responsibilities: Participate in group counseling and individual sessions, help children learn decent coping skills and ways to manage traumatic moments in their life. Help children express themselves through art therapy.

Why did you choose this internship?

  • It relates directly to what I hope to be doing after Simpson

How will this internship prepare you for the future?

  • Because the internship is what I hope to be doing in the future, it is providing me with the information and skills I will need to be successful.

  • It works well with youth that I could build a relationship with, its nearby and has a good record of interns who do well.

How will this internship prepare you for the future?

  • It will help me explore my interests to make sure I actually feel comfortable in that type of job, awareness of actual, practical daily duties and requirements.

Internship Location: Wilder Elementary

Internship Responsibilities: Observe the counselor, help with small groups and activities, help with curriculum, eventually lead a guidance class.

Why did you choose this internship?

  • I love kids and I have always thought about being a counselor, but I wanted to get a better understanding of it.

How will this internship prepare you for the future?

  • I will gain more interpersonal skills, learn more about curriculum and feel more confident speaking to individuals and groups.

Internship Responsibilities: Work with administrators and do ride-alongs with officers.

Why did you choose this internship?

  • I would like to have a career somewhere in law enforcement and I wanted an internship with a police department so I could see if I can handle being in the field.

How will this internship prepare you for the future?

  • It will give me contact and potentially a full time job that I can have while I get my masters degree in criminal justice.

  • I wanted to add something new to my experiences and hadn’t worked with children yet, so I decided to try it out. I’m glad I did, because I really enjoy it!

Internship Responsibilities: As a youth care worker my responsibilities are to effect and maintain a basic relationship with each youth while providing a warm, secure environment that produces growth and development.

Why did you choose this internship?

  • I chose this internship because it was something that would tie into both of my majors. This internship will also help me work with troubled youth and get a better understanding about how operant and classical conditioning can be used in everyday life.

How will this internship prepare you for the future?

  • This internship will help me be able to learn how to handle any individuals (especially juveniles) with behavioral problems that I may encounter during my law enforcement career.

Internship Responsibilities: Observe austism diagnostic clinics and intelligence testing, create unique hand outs about specified topics, perform research.

Why did you choose this internship?

  • I knew I wanted to have an internship that worked on improving children’s lives in some way and one of my sorority sisters did her internship here.

How will this internship prepare you for the future?

  • This internship is opening my eyes to careers I hadn’t thought about before. I have found I am very interested in occupational therapy.

Internship Responsibilities: Compile data about students, help in small group counseling session and large group sessions. Eventually I will lead both small and large groups.

  • I chose this internship because I love working with kids and wanted to see if I want to become an elementary school counselor.

How will this internship prepare you for the future?

  • This internship will teach me ways to help people through difficult times. It will also help solidify my career goal after graduation.

Why did you choose this internship?

  • I have always been interested in working with individuals with disabilities and I have worked in a different area of Childserve.

How will this internship prepare you for the future?

  • I will have the ability to shadow numerous areas, and I will get to see if this has any potential of being something I am interested in pursuing in grad school.
