Holy Grounds Beginnings
Holy Grounds was envisioned to be a quiet and fun place for students and community members to come and have a delicious cup of coffee. The visionary of Holy Grounds was a man named Gordon Shea. Gordon was the Chaplain here at Simpson from 1994 to 2001 when he passed away. To honor his memory the former President of Simpson, Kevin LaGree, helped fulfill Gordon’s dream by lending the chapel the money to get Holy Grounds started. Since then Holy Grounds has remained a non-profit coffee shop, committed to benefiting the local community, coffee farmers, and the environment while making enough money to repay our debt.
The Mission of Holy Grounds
The mission of Holy Grounds is to provide hospitality for our campus community. Our goal is to provide students, faculty, staff and the Indianola community a place to gather and enjoy each others’ company. We also strive to be conscious of our global economic impact and environmental footprint by buying from sustainable farms and using green products and practices.
How We Work
Holy Grounds is a student-run business. The coffee shop manager position is a paid undergraduate internship overseen by the Chaplain and Smith Chapel Office Manager. The coffee shop manager is responsible for recruiting volunteers, ordering supplies, and promoting its’ mission. Simpson College is known for its huge volunteer force which is what one will find at Holy Grounds. The baristas are all volunteers comprised of students, staff, and faculty. Each volunteer works a few hours a week in order to serve those in the Simpson Community.

Hannah Button – Coffee Shop Manager
My name is Hannah Button and I am currently a Junior majoring in Vocal Performance and minoring in Biology. I am thrilled to be the Holy Grounds Coffee Shop manager for my second year in a row. I enjoy making new recipes, picking out new coffee blends, and providing the best customer service possible. I have learned that a cup of coffee a day keeps the grumpy away. I look forward to seeing you at Holy Grounds.
Sarah Dodrill – Assistant Coffee Shop Manager
Hi! My name is Sarah Dodrill and I am majoring in Criminal Justice, Accounting, and Spanish. I was born and raised a Christian and I have loved coffee for as long as I can remember, so I am excited for two of my favorite thing to collide! Last year I was involved with Holy Grounds as a volunteer, so if you have any questions on how to get involved, or any drink recommendations, feel free to ask me!
Temesha Derby – Assistant Coffee Shop Manager
My name is Temesha and I’m a junior double majoring in English and Multimedia Journalism. I’m a coffee addict and won’t go to a single morning class without a cup, or two…or three. I love making espresso drinks and trying new flavors. My go-to would probably be an iced coffee with vanilla and creamer. I’m passionate about Holy Grounds because I’m excited to interact with guests and learn what they love, too. Outside of Holy Grounds, you can find me with my friends, my sorority sisters, or adventuring around town.
