Picnic with the Pooches
Love spending time with and taking care of dogs? This service opportunity is perfect for you! A few times a year we go to Second Chance Dog Rescue in Prole, IA to help walk, clean, and play with the dogs.
Alternative Fall & Spring Break Trips
RLC offers alternative Fall and Spring Break trips that are both fun and beneficial to the communities we visit. Each year, RLC chooses several cities to serve. During the 2016-2017 school year, students and staff traveled to Minneapolis, MN for Fall Break. For Spring Break, our five trips went to Nashville, TN, Baton Rouge, LA, New York, NY, South Padre Island, TX, and Summerdale, AL. These trips gave students a chance to relax and make new friends while giving back to the community. RLC is able to subsidize trip costs and support student fundraising efforts.
Habitat for Humanity
Habitat for Humanity is a popular service choice among Simpson students. Several spring break trips volunteer with Habitat for a week in locations such as Florida, Texas, and Mississippi. However, you don’t have to go far to help build homes. There are many opportunities for Simpson students to volunteer in Des Moines and Indianola. No previous experience with construction is needed!
Haven Club is an after school program during the school year that provides literacy enrichment and tutoring for children. Simpson students regularly volunteer from 3-5:30PM.
Every year, RLC hosts Justice Week, an entire week dedicated to learning about injustice, doing meaningful service, and spreading awareness of important issues in our community and around the world. Last year, we learned about human trafficking, homelessness and hunger, childhood education, environmental sustainability, and animal ethics.
Meet the Outreach Circle
My name is Katie Dean and I am excited to be a part of the Outreach circle because I believe God calls us to love and help everyone, no matter who they are or where they are from. My first experience with service was through my home church; they have their own food pantry and clothing closet that they make available on the weekends. At Simpson, my first experience with service was through Picnic with the Pooches. I also had an internship at the Iowa Correctional Institute for Women, which produced a call to Outreach that I didn’t know I had.
Hello! My name is Rachel Hollingsworth, and I am a junior religion and psychology double major. I am excited to assist with outreach, as I have always been passionate about service. My love for serving others is rooted in faith, and I am passionate about volunteering. My other campus activities include: Greek Life, choir, and the Wesley Service Scholar program. In addition to campus activities, I also serve as a delegate on the IOWA Commission on the Status and Role of Women for the United Methodist Church.
Hey, my name is Andrea Casaretto. I am an International Relations major, with minors in French and Religion. I am a Muslim convert, and my faith inspires me to get active in helping others. Alternative break trips, the Wesley Service Scholars program, and Simpson’s commitment to service have all helped me stay involved, and helped my college experience become so much more meaningful. I cannot wait to be behind the scenes planning, and help others dive into the spirit of service!
