Ian Zimmerman ’11- Lead Community Builder at Dwolla

Coming out of high school, Ian Zimmerman wasn’t sure what he wanted to do.

But choosing Simpson was an easy decision for him. Not only was he following in his family’s footsteps, but he also knew that the College’s proximity to Des Moines and the opportunities offered by a liberal arts college made Simpson the perfect fit.

“I met a lot of great people here,” he says, “and I guarantee you I will stay in contact with them for the rest of my life. And that’s professors, peers and people around the community. It is a big family; not just Simpson, but the community.”

It didn’t take long for these opportunities and connections to link Zimmerman directly to his current success. When interviewing for his job at Dwolla, he was able to make an instant connection with COO Charise Flynn, a 2004 Simpson alum.

Dwolla is an e-commerce company that provides an online payment system and mobile payments network. The company was founded in 2008 as a startup in Iowa but has quickly expanded across the US. Ian was hired early on as Dwolla’s ninth employee. Because the company was rapidly growing, Zimmerman had to “wear a lot of different hats,” but he attributes his liberal arts background to making this an easy transition.

Zimmerman now finds himself taking charge of Dwolla’s custom support team as Lead Community Builder.

“Where I’m at right now, I wouldn’t be here without Simpson — that’s a total truth,” he says.
