Kate Nielsen: Transfer Success Story

Kate Nielsen

Exercise Science – 2014

Accepted into the Doctorate of Physical Therapy Program at Des Moines University

Why did you decide to come to Simpson College?

“I decided to transfer to Simpson for the athletics and academics. I transferred to Simpson from Minnesota State, Mankato, after realizing it was not a good fit for me. I wanted to play basketball and wanted to pursue a career in Physical Therapy. Simpson was a great school for both of those. Simpson’s location and connections with Des Moines was something very appealing to me. I knew I would need internships and observation hours for physical therapy, and I knew that the possibilities were endless through Simpson.”

What was your experience like here at Simpson College?

“My experience at Simpson has been better than anything I ever could have imagined. From an athletic standpoint, I was part of three conference championships and three trips to the NCAA tournament, including a trip to the Sweet 16. From an academic standpoint, I will be receiving a B.A. In Exercise Science, and I have been accepted into the Doctorate of Physical Therapy Program at Des Moines University.”

What would you tell a prospective student who is interested in your area of study?

“I don’t think there is a better school out there for Pre-Physical Therapy. I was able to find a major that interested me most, while completing all necessary coursework for physical therapy school. I was able to do two internships that I have benefited greatly from, as well as complete all my necessary observation hours.”

How has transferring to Simpson helped you?

“Simpson has helped me become connected both locally and statewide. The faculty has been tremendous and they all care on a personal level. They have believed in me and helped me pursue my career.” How was the process of transferring to Simpson? Was it easy? “The transferring process could not have been easier here at Simpson. Gwen does a great job staying in touch and telling you exactly what you need to do to make the transition go smoothly.”
