Study Abroad Opportunities
The French program at Simpson offers both semester-long immersion opportunities and 3-week May Term travel courses. You can choose between a semester in Tahiti and a semester in France, or you can do both! There are also generally one or more May Term travel courses headed to French-speaking countries each year.
Semester in Tahiti
Thanks to a partnership with the University of French Polynesia, Simpson students can live and study for a semester on the tropical island of Tahiti in the South Pacific. Tahiti is a fascinating place where Western and non-Western cultures mix, where post-colonial issues are at play, and where the geography contrasts completely with that of the Midwestern United States. Why not learn French in the tropics and gain a whole new perspective on the world?
Semester in France
A new partnership with the Catholic University of the West in Angers makes it possible for Simpson students to spend a semester immersed in the language and culture of France. The French-for-foreigners institute on campus allows students from beginning to advanced levels to work on their French skills and helps them integrate into the local community. Angers is on a high-speed train line, making it an easy hub from which to explore other areas of France.
May Term Travel courses
How about taking a travel course to a French-speaking destination during May Term? A variety of course topics and locations have been offered in the past: French-American cultural differences in France, Arts and Apes in Rwanda, Polynesian Culture in Tahiti, and more. In May 2013, Castles, Colorful Characters, and Crucial Moments in French History took students to Paris to delve into the richness of its past. Download course flier.
