Simpson College Continuing and Graduate Programs is pleased to announce the appointment of Ignacio Alvarez as West Des Moines Campus Director/Academic Advisor. Alvarez comes to Simpson from the University of Illinois at Chicago, where he served as Director of Advising. His career also includes Academic Advising stops at the University of Iowa, University of Illinois Springfield, and California Moreno Valley College.
Ignacio is a First-generation student that earned his bachelor’s degree in History from Lake Forest College, IL in 2003. He earned his master’s degree in History at Claremont Graduate University, CA in 2014.
Alvarez is a passionate higher education leader with over a decade of experience working with first-generation, veteran, international, transfer, non-traditional, Undocumented, and DACA students. His professional portfolio demonstrates a leadership style that encourages diversity and inclusion while building an effective faculty and student support system.
Alvarez’s commitment to cultural inclusivity has been a central focus throughout his professional career. His University teaching and lecture experiences foster inclusion to LGBTQ, First-Generation, and BIPOC communities. Alvarez is bilingual and bicultural in Spanish and English.
Alvarez began his Campus Director/Academic Advisor position at Simpson on July 31, 2020. In this role, Alvarez will be responsible for overseeing evening classes at the West Des Moines campus, provide academic advising services for all evening and online undergraduate and PB certificate students, assist the Dean of Continuing and Graduate Programs in the development of student services, as well as development of long-range plans for academic programs.
