Assistant Professor of Music

POSITION: Assistant Professor of Music – Director of the Simpson College Jazz Ensemble / Instructor of applied instrumental music.

DUTIES:  directing the Simpson College Jazz Ensemble; offering individual instruction to majors and non-majors in the candidate’s applied area; teaching an instrumental methods course and a Jazz Methods course for music education majors; coaching instrumental chamber music (including a jazz combo), and teaching general education courses in music.  This position also entails administering annually a well-established two-day high school jazz band competition in January as well as administering a regionally acclaimed week-long jazz combo camp in June.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  D.M.A. or Ph.D. in Music or comparable professional experience; demonstrated experience leading jazz ensembles and teaching in an applied area.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  Demonstrated success leading college/university jazz ensembles and combos; demonstrated knowledge of college-level repertoire in the candidate’s applied area; demonstrated experience teaching instrumental methods coursework; demonstrated record of excellence in teaching general education courses in music at the college level; significant ability as a performer in both the jazz and classical realms; demonstrated ability to network with jazz educators and performers;  demonstrated ability to recruit instrumentalists.

Simpson College is a selective private, liberal arts college affiliated with the United Methodist Church.  Established in 1860, the College enrolls 1,300 full-time students.  The Simpson College Department of Music offers a strong traditional music program to approximately 75 music majors who are taught by 9 full-time faculty and 25 adjunct faculty and teaching artists.  The Simpson Music Department has maintained full accreditation from the National Association of Schools of Music since 1947.

Simpson College is located in Indianola, Iowa, a town of 15,000 people just 12 miles south of Des Moines (metro population: 650,000).  Des Moines boasts a vibrant musical scene, including an active jazz community.  Throughout the state of Iowa, moreover, high school jazz bands are prevalent and competitive.
