Adjunct Professor in Psychology

The Psychology Department at Simpson College, Indianola, IA, anticipates the need for an adjunct instructor for Spring 2020 to teach Cognitive Neuroscience, see course description below. We prefer candidates with a Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology or Neuroscience, or ABD candidates from those areas with an expressed interest in teaching.

We anticipate a need for a qualified instructor to teach our Cognitive Neuroscience (PSYC 329). The normal schedule for this course would be two 1.5-hour meetings on T/Th. The successful candidate would be expected to engage the students in interactive lectures and class activities. The course should focus on helping students gain a working understanding of theories of cognitive processes and relevant neurobiological research that supports such theories. The course should focus on cognitive neuroscience from the standpoint of normal functioning as measured via such psychological techniques as single-cell recording, fMRI and PET, as well as disrupted functioning as evidenced from deficits due to brain injury, stroke and congenital abnormalities. The course should review the fundamentals of the science of cognitive neuroscience and neuropsychology, including neuroanatomy, neural communication, and research methodology as well as introduce the neural bases of particular mental functions (sensation and perception, attention, memory, language, etc.).

The cover letter should: express the candidate’s interest and qualifications for the position, relate any previous teaching experiences, and briefly discuss the candidate’s thoughts on providing a student-centered and engaging classroom in the context of a liberal arts college.
