Biography

I will share a bit about my educational background, career history and areas of special interest.  I grew up in southwestern Wisconsin working in the family business (a.k.a. family farm) and attended the University of Wisconsin-Platteville where I earned my B.S. in political science.  After working in the UW-P Library and Informational Services departments, I decided to attend graduate school.  Both my Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) and my Doctorate of Jurisprudence (J.D.) are from Drake University in Des Moines, IA.  While in law school I clerked for the Bradshaw, Fowler, Proctor and Fairgrave Law Firm in the property, tax and corporate area.  During law school I also worked at the Boone County Law Clinic Office of Drake Law School. After passing the bar exam (my license to practice law is up to date) I spent a year as a graduate judicial law clerk for Chief Judge Leo Oxberger on the Iowa Court of Appeals.  I then spent a year as graduate judicial law clerk for Justice James Carter on the Iowa Supreme Court.  Additional experience included working in the Iowa Senate as Parliamentarian, serving of counsel with a solo practitioner, helping with a forfeiture case through the Iowa chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union and doing pro bono immigration work through the Catholic and Methodist Churches and the Justice for our Neighbors Legal Clinic. I love the courses I teach (Business Law and Ethics I and II, Human Resources Management and Strategic Management Senior Capstone.)  I have traveled on semester and May Term courses with students all over the world and truly love showing students the world.  I am in the Department of Business Administration and Economics and my office, #20, is on the “garden level” of McNeill Hall.  Areas of special interest include entrepreneurship, strategy and business law.   I assist several student groups on campus including the Pre-Law Society, the new SHRM student chapter and the Simpson College Collegiate Entrepreneurs’ Organization (CEO). Outside professional memberships and activities include the Iowa State Bar Association, board member for Leadership Iowa University and national and local membership in the Society for Human Resource Management.
