Break, May Term and Summer Housing

Simpson College’s apartments, residence halls, theme houses and college-owned Greek buildings close over winter break but remain open and freely accessible to residents during fall break, Thanksgiving break, and spring break. Please be aware that during all breaks, even when buildings remain open, food plans are not active. During all breaks, with the exception of Winter Break, dining options are available at the cost to the student (flex, debit/credit card or cash). Students required to be on campus by athletics will have food provided through athletics.

Questions about break housing can be directed to reslife@simpson.edu.

Winter Break Housing 2024-2025

For winter break, all apartment buildings, Barker, Kresge, Buxton, Picken, KKG, KTP, ATO, SAE, and LXA, and Theme houses will be closed from 12:00 pm on Friday, December 13 through 8:00 am on Sunday, January 12.  During this time, students will only have access to their room if they have requested permission through the form below or if they have a college-sponsored and certified reason to stay on campus.

Students who request to stay will be charged $19 per night while in break housing.  Billing applies to nights spent on campus between December 13 and January 11. To request to stay on campus for break, please use this form.  Please note there is no confirmation sent.  If you complete the form, you’re set.  Please also note that food services will be closed during this break period, so if you choose to stay, you will need to provide your own meals.

If you are a student-athlete who will need to be on campus over winter break to participate in practices and/or competitions, we will be in touch with your coach or group/team advisor. You are allowed to stay free of charge and do not need to fill out this form.

If you are working for Simpson over break and need to stay on campus during break, please fill out the form, but you will not be charged for staying on campus.

If you are an international student and need to stay on campus during break, please fill out the form, but you will not be charged for staying on campus.

If you require travel days, you need to fill out the form so your building access will stay on for travel days.

May Term Housing

During May Term at Simpson, only students meeting one of the following reasons listed below are allowed to stay on campus.  For those not staying for May term, check-out deadlines are 12pm (noon) on Friday, May 2nd for those not graduating, and 12pm (noon) on Sunday, May 4th for those who are.  Closing Guidelines for Spring 2025 can be viewed the spring newsletter.

For students who live on-campus during the academic year, there is no additional charge for room during May term for below reasons 1-3.  A meal plan for those enrolled in the May Term will be assigned based on your Spring Meal Plan assignment. Students in May Housing for any reason will have unused Spring Flex rolled over. If a student is not required to have a May Term meal plan, but would like one, they can contact Student Development at x1306.

The check-out deadline for all students who are staying for May term but are not transitioning to summer housing is 6pm on Friday, May 23, 2025.

Students enrolled in an academic course or internship experience for at least 2 credits.  Students who are enrolled for an on-campus May term course will automatically be assigned a May term meal plan based on their spring meal plan.   Unused flex money from spring semester will rollover into May term.  For students staying on campus for May term courses but not staying for summer housing, the housing check-out deadline is 6pm on Friday, May 23, 2025.

Students engaged in spring athletics, with approval from a coach.  If a student-athlete does not have another reason to stay, they will be asked to move out the day after the end of their season.  Students staying for only this reason will not have a meal plan added to their account, and their meal plans will end Friday, May 2nd after lunch. Unused flex money from spring semester will rollover into May term, however.

Students working as a campus work-study for 24 hrs./wk. or more.  Supervisor approval is required.  Students staying for only this reason will not have a meal plan added to their account, and their meal plans will end Friday, May 2nd. Unused flex money from spring semester will rollover into May term, however.

Students moving directly into summer housing on Tuesday, May 27th.  If no other reasons to stay for May term exist, please note summer housing billing will begin when you would normally check-out of spring housing.  Students staying for only this reason will not have a meal plan added to their account, and their meal plans will end Friday, May 2nd. Unused flex money from spring semester will rollover into May term, however.

Summer 2025 Housing

Summer Housing Applications

Summer Housing Applications will be available mid-spring Semester 2025, usually after Spring Break.  Summer housing is available for continuing Simpson students and will most likely be in Clinton Apartments and Detroit Street Apartments.  (The rate will be $600/month). Priority deadline is April 4th, 2025, but applications will be received based on space availability after that on a rolling basis.

Due to the limited number of spaces, housing will be prioritized for students who are returning in Fall 2025 and taking classes during the summer session.  If a student is set to only take classes during summer and not for fall, they will need to be checked out of their summer assignment by no later than July 31st at 5pm.

Colonial Storage for Summer 2025

Colonial Basement Storage Applications will be available on Monday, March 3rd. Storage availability is extremely limited and will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis with priority focus for out of state students who are more than 500 miles away from campus.  Each unit will have a minimum of 2 people assigned, and up to 3 students maximum.

Storage is only available to those students who are returning for the fall semester and all items must be removed by the end of August, or students will be subject to weekly fines.
