"I am a sophomore at Simpson College and am currently studying English and Philosophy with a minor in Spanish. I hope to work in publishing after graduating from Simpson. Besides being a Writing Fellow, I am involved in the Speech and Debate program, English Club, Greek life, and the Culver Fellowship. I am excited to be a Writing Fellow because I have a genuine passion for the editing side of the writing process and intend to one day pursue it as a career. I am also looking forward to the personal and academic growth that both I and the students I mentor will experience as we work together to become better writers." - Taylor Hoffman
"I was born and raised in Illinois, graduated from a high school in Texas, and now live in Kansas City, Missouri. I am going into my junior year in the fall of 2020, majoring in Mathematics and Computer Science. On campus, I stay busy by juggling my course load, playing on a Women's tennis team, being a mathematics tutor for Simpson's Center for Academic Resources, and having a work study in the Instructional Design Department. I also work as a tennis instructor at LifeTime Fitness in Urbandale, Iowa.
Here at Simpson I have had a chance to be involved in a lot of great opportunities. I job shadowed at EMC Insurance for two weeks my first May term, participated in the ICM/MCM Math Modeling Competition twice and the ICPC Regional Programming Contest once, and I conducted undergraduate research through the Bryan Summer Research program the summer after my first year.
This is my second year as a Writing Fellow and I look forward to getting to be a part of another great SC 101 class." - Emily King
"I am from Shenandoah, Iowa where I graduated from Shenandoah High School. Here at Simpson, I am an honor student, a Culver Fellow, a Writing Fellow, a Community Advisor (CA), and I also enjoy playing tennis for the Storm. Outside of school I enjoy wakeboarding, lifting, hiking, spending time with my friends, and eating lots of sushi!" - Donni Kinghorn
"In 2018, I graduated from Lincoln High School, where I was a four-year varsity runner in Cross Country and Track. I graduated top 15% of my class, with recognition for my two years in the National Honor Society. I enrolled at Simpson College upon graduating to pursue my B.A.in Physics. Since a young age, I have dreamt of being a teacher. I have a passion for helping and guiding others, so naturally, I am minoring in Secondary Education to do just that. Some of my achievements including making it on the Dean's List 2019-2020 and receiving the Doft Science Honor Award 2020.
Apart from my studies, I am a member of Physics Club, Sustainability Club, and FCA, as well as a Wesley Service Scholar. I also run on the Cross Country and Track team here at Simpson. When I am not studying, I enjoy biking, skateboarding, and spending time with my teammates.
I have plans to graduate from Simpson in 2022 and pursue a career as a high school Physics, Chemistry, or Mathematics teacher. I hope to obtain my coaching license and coach High School Cross Country and Track." - Cat Lucht
"Hello! My name is Rady Malcom. I am a third- year student here at Simpson College, pursuing a major in Neuroscience.
I chose to be a Writing Fellow for two main reasons: As a way to continually improve my writing skills, and as an opportunity to expand my campus involvement and interaction with incoming students! I strive to not only be an excellent advisor for writing, but also for campus life. These are aspects of college that can be extremely daunting for incoming freshman. I hope to aid students in bridging that gap and becoming successful at Simpson, both academically and socially!"
"My name is Eden Moad and I am a returning Writing Fellow to the program. I am excited to work with Dr. Eckerty because I have learned about the different effects music has on people throughout my study of it here at Simpson. Music is one of my favorite topics to discuss, and I have enjoyed learning how to merge two of my biggest passions.
Fun writing facts about me:
- I tend to write long, grammatically correct sentences that take up multiple lines
- I started and finished writing a full two-act play within a year
- I would die for the Oxford comma
I am a double Music Education and Theatre major with an endorsement to teach Theatre, Speech, and Communications. My involvement on campus includes being the Religious Life Community President, a volunteer barista at Holy Grounds, and DJ for KSTM 88.9: The Storm, and holding membership in Simpson Productions, the Speech and Debate team, and various clubs, honorary fraternities, and ensembles."
"My name is Mary Nelson and I am a junior at Simpson. I am an English major with a minor in Secondary Education. While here, I am also a member of the cross country and track teams. I am excited to get some experience helping new writers adapt to the landscape of college life. During the summer, I have been working as a camp counselor in the Okoboji area. In my free time, I enjoy reading, painting, eating, sleeping, and hanging out with my friends."
"Hello! My name is Laura and am a sophomore double majoring in Mathematics and Spanish with and Honors endorsement. On campus I am envolved in Greek Life, Choir, Theater, Wesley Service Scholarship, and Iowa History Center. I am also a student ambassador at the Admissions Office, so I get to give campus tours and promote Simpson all the time! I am originally from Okoboji, Iowa, so I love to spend time on the lake and at the beach. I also love to read, watch Netflix, and spend time with loved ones!" - Laura Nielsen
"My name is Paige Nygaard and I am a sophomore at Simpson. I am from Wesley, a small town in north central Iowa, and graduated from Algona High School in the spring of 2019. My major is undecided, but I know I want to do History Education or Child Development. When I was applying to college and trying to find the right college for me, I knew I wanted a smaller college that was going to give me more opportunities and feel more inclusive. Once I visited Simpson, I fell in love with the atmosphere of the college. Simpson has a unique community that made me feel like I was at home.
I chose to apply to be a writing fellow last spring after being nominated by faculty. I had heard about the application process of being a writing fellow, but I hadn't really considered it until I got nominated. After thinking about it for a few days, I decided that it would be a fun experience that I could endeavor upon. Once I had put in my application, I started to think about how fun this experience could be. I would get to meet a ton of people I might have never talked to and get to know them. I get to help other people and their growth in writing. And this experience could help me figure out what I want to do with my life.
Along with being a writing fellow on campus, I am involved in cross country track, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Light Company, and Education Club. Getting involved on campus is one of the best choices I made because this is where I have made most of my friends on campus. The great thing about Simpson is it is small enough anybody can be involved in what they want, which really helped me to find what I am passionate about and discover more what I want to do in life."
"I'm from Ottumwa, Iowa and graduated from Albia High School. I am majoring in Biology with a minor in Environmental Science and considering a second major in History. Besides being a Writing Fellow, I am an intern at the chapel on campus, and I am involved in Sustainability Club. I'm excited to be a Writing Fellow this fall and work to help first-years navigate their way through their first semester of college." - Ashley Pickens
"Hello! My name is Caitlyn Potter and I am from West Des Moines, Iowa. This is my second year at Simpson. I am studying Elementary Education and Spanish. In the future, I hope to teach upper elementary students and eventually become a principal. At Simpson, I am also involved in theatre, the Wesley Service Program, and Tri-Delta. I am looking forward to helping incoming students with their writing and academics this semester."
"My name is Layne Richey. I have grown up in small towns all around Iowa. My main hobbies are watching various tv shows and playing video games. I first got interested in coming to Simpson College in my sophomore year of high school when a recruiter came to town. After that, I visited campus with a few friends and I fell in love. The atmosphere and community that Simpson College displayed got me excited for college.
At Simpson College I have been very active on campus. I am the president of Lambda Chi Alpha's chapter on campus. This is something I am very proud of as I get the chance to lead some of my best friends through some rather difficult times. I am also the president of the Psychology Club. This opportunity helps Psychology students think creatively about how to get people interested in the field as well as provide fun events to the campus. I am the Manager for the Student Government Association. This is a paid job that allows me to help with the basic functioning of our campus community. I am also a tutor in the Psychology department. This also is a paid position and helps me understand and convey information regarding Psychological topics.
After the 2020-21 academic year, I will be looking to go to graduate school. I will be graduating in May of 2021 with a major in Psychology in hopes to become a practitioner. I have always been interested in addiction and would love to work with these individuals in treatment plans."
"Hello First Year Students! My name is Natasha Shipp, and I am a senior here at Simpson studying Applied Philosophy and Political Science with a concentration in the Honors Program. I am very excited to be your Writing Fellow this fall and take part in the Galactic Senate with you! I have to be honest, I am a bit new to most of Star Wars, but I did my research this summer and watched all of the movies that I hadn't already seen. I hope to learn from you all as well. I could use the help.
I am from Oskaloosa, Iowa, which is about an hour from our campus. Choosing Simpson was surprisingly easy for me! During high school, I actually visited Simpson's campus about once a year for various debate tournaments and jazz band competitions. I was always captivated by the beauty of the campus no matter what season I visited during. I also knew how strong of an academic reputation Simpson holds in Iowa through our fantastic professors (like Professor Magalhaes) and the Culver Center.
Throughout my time at Simpson, I have had the opportunity to join and lead a few organizations such as my Greek Life house, our Campus Activities Board, the Culver Center, and one of the political groups on campus. I have had a few internships as well, and am more than willing to help you with your searches and writing for opportunities outside of school! I cannot wait to meet all of you and help you find your path to success here! Roll Storm!"

"I graduated from Johnston High School in Johnston, Iowa. I am a sophomore majoring in History and Disability Studies. On campus, I am involved in vocal music, speech and debate, mock trial, and the Iowa History Center. After graduating, I hope to attend Law School to study Disability Advocacy Law.
I am excited to join the Writing Fellows program as my love of writing began extremely early. My mom is a self-published children's book author that encouraged me to read and write from a very young age. After attending various writing conferences, I realized my passion for supporting others through editing. I am looking forward to welcoming the newest Simpson students and helping them find their won path to success by assisting in the transition to collegiate-level writing." - Allie Tubbs
