Audition & Interview Information

Who is eligible for a theatre scholarship?

Theatre Simpson scholarships are available to new or continuing Simpson College students. The awards are given based on an audition and interview process. Scholarships are available for both theatre majors and non-majors. Students earning a theatre scholarship are expected to participate in all theatre productions.

What are the audition guidelines?

For the audition, prepare two contrasting monologues (each no longer than two minutes in length). One should be light or comic, the other serious. Each piece should be memorized and staged. At the beginning of your audition, you should introduce yourself and then the names of the pieces you are performing.

You are not auditioning for a part in a show; you are trying to “showcase” your abilities and potential. Therefore, choose material that you are comfortable with, that you can do well and that lets your audience see you at your best.

Following the audition, you will meet with departmental faculty for the interview. This is an ideal time for you to ask any questions you may have about Theatre Simpson.

Additionally, you should submit one letter of reference from an adult who has worked with you and/or who has seen you perform (e.g. high school director, other teachers, speech coaches, etc.). The letter should highlight your past experience, work habits, character, ability to take direction, and your capacity for interacting with others.

What does an audition consist of for technical theatre students?

Students interested in technical theatre areas are also encouraged to bring a portfolio which reflects their technical theatre experiences. Students must also submit a letter of recommendation as noted above.
