Adelaide, Australia

Fall 2022

Offered in fall semesters of even numbered years, next offered in Fall 2022

The faculty director for the Fall 2022 Australia program will be Theatre Arts Professor Mimi Kammer.

The “Simpson Experience Abroad” semester program in Australia allows students to explore the academic, social, and cultural life of Adelaide along with other program participants. Students take classes alongside local and other international students at our partner institution, the University of Adelaide, and get a glimpse into Australian culture by living with a local host family or choose to be more independent by staying in an international off-campus dorm.

The following two courses will be offered by Professor Kammer for all students on the 2022 program:

  • SEA 290:  Environmental Arts and Literature in Australia (4 credits; ECC designations: Oral Communications & The Arts, pending approval)
  • SEA 262:  Study Abroad Reflection (4 credits; ECC designation: Global Perspective)

Students will also take two additional courses of their choosing taught by faculty at the University of Adelaide which will transfer back to Simpson as 4 credits each.  Visit the University’s “Degree Finder” and the “Course Finder” to see the types of courses offered .

Cost of the program

To participate in the program, students pay Simpson tuition, room and board plus a program fee likely between $6,100 – $6,600.  In addition, students are also responsible for covering their air transportation costs to and from Adelaide at a cost of around $1,600 from Des Moines (airfare from other departure cities will vary).

Requirements

Front of Campus

Students must take and pass a one-credit preparation course during the spring semester preceding the semester in Australia. Students must also have a grade point average of at least 2.5 both at the time of application for the program, and at the time of departure in order to be able to study abroad.

To apply for admission into the program, students should complete the online application, and upload all of the required documents by 4:30pm on Thursday, Oct. 21, 2021.   A complete application includes:

  • Creating an account on the online application system, and then completing the online application process on that site.
  • Writing a one to two page personal statement explaining why you’re interested in this semester program and how it fits into your educational goals.
  • Providing the names and contact information for two people who could serve as references (neither of whom are related to you and at least one should be a Simpson professor) on your skills, abilities, and character.

Then, upload the following to your SC Connect portal:

  • a copy of your Simpson College degree audit.  Once you’ve obtained your degree audit on your SC Connect account, right click within the web browser and “Select All”. Then right click again and select “Copy”. Open a new document in Microsoft Word and change the orientation to Landscape. Then Right click in the document to “Paste” the Degree Audit into the new Word document. Save this document as a .pdf file by selecting “PDF” from the “Save file type” drop down menu which is located below the file name.  Then upload the file
  • a copy of the data page from your passport, if you already have it, but if you don’t already have a passport, then upload a copy of your completed passport application (with your SSN blacked out). Please note: you are not required to submit that completed passport application, the supporting documentation or the associated processing fee to the Warren County Recorder’s Office or any other passport application processing site until you’ve received notification that you have been accepted into the study abroad program.
  • Proof that you’ve made a $200 non-refundable deposit to the Simpson College Business Office.  The preferred method of making the deposit payment is in person at the Business Office window.  This will ensure that the deposit payment is properly credited to one's student account as a study abroad deposit payment.  Alternatively, students are able to make the payment online using SC Connect, but if this is done, it is essential to also email Nicole Kickbush in the Business Office to let her know that the payment made online is intended to be a study abroad deposit as the payment system doesn't allow for such a notation.  This deposit is applied to the program cost, upon acceptance to the program, and will be credited back to the student’s account should they not be accepted into the program.

When you complete your application, you will be asked to sign up for a 15-minute interview with the Program Director and the Director of International Education.

Students will be notified of their status in the Australia program soon after interviews with applicants are completed, and they will be enrolled in the spring semester, 1-credit study abroad prep course taught by Professor Kammer.   A second deposit payment of $300 will be due by Friday, March 4, 2022.

Final program payment is due to be paid with Fall Semester tuition, room, and board by July 1, 2022
