The 2018 Photo Contest Grand Prize winner is Madison Hance for her photo “Mona Monkey Makes Kat Go Bananas” taken in Ghana during her May Term 2018 international travel course, Ghana: The Heart of West African Culture.

It’s time to submit photos for the 12th Annual Study Abroad Photo Contest.  Submissions for this year’s contest can be received until 4pm on Monday, Sept. 9, 2019.

Simpson students who were registered for a Study Abroad program in Fall 2018, Spring 2019, May Term 2019 or Summer 2019 are eligible to enter even if they have since graduated from Simpson.

All photos must have been taken by the student entering them.

Entries from professional photographers are not allowed.

Each study abroad student may enter up to two photos per category for a total of six photos in the competition.

All submissions become the property of Simpson College, which retains the right to use any photo entries in its publications, on its website, etc.  Photos will not be returned.

Entries must be received at the Office of International Education (OIE) by 4:00 PM on Monday, Sept. 9, 2019 to be considered as part of the 2019 contest.

Category #1 (C1): People & Culture – photos that capture the essence of the people and culture of your host country and the places you visited

Category #2 (C2): Natural & Urban Landscapes – show us the sights, natural wonders, thrilling architecture, and unique character of your destinations

Category #3 (C3): The Storm Abroad – pictures of Simpson students and faculty in recognizably “international” settings, i.e. with monuments, wildlife, or buildings typical of your program site

You must submit both a 4 inch by 6 inch “hard copy” print of your picture as well as an electronic version of the photo in jpeg format (contact the OIE if your pictures are on film rather than digital).

Digital photos should be taken with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi (dots per inch).

Photo file sizes should be at least 400KB and not larger than 10MB each.  If they are larger than this, you will need to submit the electronic files on a jump drive to the OIE rather than sending them via email.

Put “Photo Contest” in the subject line of your message.  In the body of the message, tell us …

  • your name
  • your study abroad program or May Term travel course
  • where & when you took each photo
  • which category (C1, C2 or C3) are you wanting the photo(s) to be entered
  • a title for each photo of 15 words or less

Send your photo files to studyabroad@simpson.edu , AND submit your “hard copy” prints with the above information by Monday, Sept. 9, 2019 either by dropping them off at the OIE (located in the Student Development Suite of the Kent Campus Center) or by mailing them early enough to ensure they are received by the Sept. 9 deadline addressed to:  Study Abroad Photo Contest, Office of International Education, Simpson College, 701 N C Street, Indianola, IA 50125.  If you choose to mail the prints, please take care to package them so that they will not be bent or damaged.

Any photos that you enter must be named like this:

Your last name_Contest category_Country in which photo was taken_Number of photo.jpg.

For example…

Cash prizes will be awarded in each of the three categories with one overall “best of show” prize of a $250 STA Travel voucher plus a cash award will be given to an outstanding photo from any of the categories.

Contest winners will be announced at the Study Abroad Fair, and the winning photos will be displayed in Dunn Library following the Fair as well as on the study abroad website.  All photos submitted for the contest become property of Simpson College which reserves the right to use the photos in promotional materials for study abroad or for the college as a whole, as well as on the college’s webpages.  Even if you don’t win a prize, you may well see your photo on our website or in a promotional booklet or brochure.  Thanks in advance for sharing with us your photos from your experiences abroad.
