2020 Contest winning photo by Jonathan Camacho
Congratulations to Jonathan Camacho,  winner of Simpson’s 13th Annual Study Abroad Photo Contest, for his photo “A small motu in Raiatea, French Polynesia” taken while participating in the “Simpson Experience Abroad” semester program in Tahiti in Spring 2020.

Click here to view all of the submissions for the 2020 Photo Contest.

Submissions for the 14th Annual Study Abroad Photo Contest will be accepted in September 2021.  Check back in Summer 2021 for the specific date.

Simpson students who were registered for a Study Abroad program in Fall 2020, or in Spring, May Term or Summer 2021 are eligible to enter even if they have since graduated from Simpson.

All photos must have been taken by the student entering them.

Entries from professional photographers are not allowed.

Each study abroad student may enter up to two photos per category for a total of six photos in the competition.

All submissions become the property of Simpson College, which retains the right to use any photo entries in its publications, on its website, etc.  Photos will not be returned.

Entries must be received at the Office of International Education (OIE) by 4:00 PM on a yet-to-be-determined date in September 2021 to be considered as part of the 2021 contest.

Category #1 (C1): People & Culture – photos that capture the essence of the people and culture of your host country and the places you visited

Category #2 (C2): Natural & Urban Landscapes – show us the sights, natural wonders, thrilling architecture, and unique character of your destinations

Category #3 (C3): The Storm Abroad – pictures of Simpson students and faculty in recognizably “international” settings, i.e. with monuments, wildlife, or buildings typical of your program site

For the 2020 contest, only electronic versions of photos in jpeg format need to be submitted (no "hard copies" are needed this year).

Digital photos should be taken with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi (dots per inch).

Photo file sizes should be at least 400KB and not larger than 10MB each.  If they are larger than this, you will need to submit the electronic files on a jump drive to the OIE rather than sending them via email.

Put “Photo Contest” in the subject line of your message.  In the body of the message, tell us …

  • your name
  • your study abroad program
  • where & when you took each photo
  • which category (C1, C2 or C3) are you wanting the photo(s) to be entered
  • a title for each photo of 15 words or less

Send your photo files to studyabroad@simpson.edu along with the above information by a yet-to-be-determined date in September 2021.

Any photos that you enter must be named like this:

For the 2020 contest, one "Best in Show" grand prize will be awarded $100.

The contest winner will be announced as part of the 2021 Virtual Study Abroad Fair and displayed on the study abroad website following the Fair.  All photos submitted for the contest become property of Simpson College which reserves the right to use the photos in promotional materials for study abroad or for the college as a whole, as well as on the college’s webpages.  Even if you don’t win, you may well see your photo on our website or in a promotional booklet or brochure.  Thanks in advance for sharing with us your photos from your experiences abroad.
