Alley-Oop Event was a Slam Dunk

The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion teamed up with the Simpson Athletics Department to host a first-of-its-kind event, Alley-Oop with Simpson Storm.

Over 50 participants from Des Moines area schools, the Unified Sports program, and the Best Buddies program joined the Storm to hone in on their basketball skills. The participants practiced passing, ball handling and shooting baskets. They also had the opportunity to learn some cheers and participate in a scrimmage.

“This was a passion project of mine, and a deeply personal one as well,” said Tisha Carter Smith, Associate Director for Multicultural and International Affairs. “It was so gratifying to see my vision come to life in such a magnificent way. There was joy everywhere. It was so infectious that everyone who stepped into the gym felt it,” she continued.

Carter-Smith was also sure to extend her appreciation to all who helped make the event happen. “It was only possible thanks to all the collaborators, including the Simpson student volunteers and athletes,” she stated.
