Kicking Off Black History Month with George Washington Carver Day
Join us in February as we celebrate Black History Month, starting with George Washington Carver Day.
This year’s George Washington Carver Day Celebration will take place over three days on the Simpson campus and throughout the Indianola community. Events include Carver artifacts and art exhibitions, a presentation by the Carver Birthplace Association, a formal toast at West Hill Brewery, and a wide array of children’s activities on the Indianola Square on Saturday, Feb. 3.

On Tuesday, Feb.13, you can join Simpson as we host Producer and Des Moines native Sonya Jackson for the presentation of Punch 9 for Harold Washington. This award-winning 2021 documentary chronicles the election of Chicago’s first Black mayor in 1983. Jackson will introduce the film at 6 p.m. and answer questions from the audience after the screening.
