Simpson College Launches New Health & Exercise Science Major
Simpson College announced today that beginning in the Fall of 2019, they will be offering a new major called Health & Exercise Science. This comprehensive new offering replaces the Clinical Health Science and Exercise Science majors previously offered by the college.
The department has been planning for a new major since 2017. It incorporates the needs of employers in order to make sure students are prepared for the demands of the 21st century health needs.
Health & Exercise Science will allow students the flexibility to create a major based around their interests and goals.
“This is not a ‘one size fits all’ course of study,” stated Nicci Whalen, Sport Science and Health Education department chair. “Students can choose classes supported by professional organizations such as the American College of Sports Medicine and National Strength and Conditioning Association, to really customize their education.”
The major will feature three primary themes – human performance, clinical, and health and wellness. Classes capitalize on the strength of the biological sciences and kinesiology to provide a comprehensive education in this rapidly-growing industry.
Students interested in a variety of careers in health care may find this major of interest. Some of the careers include health coaches, corporate wellness, strength and conditioning coaches, physical and occupational therapists, chiropractors, physician assistants, cardiac rehab clinicans, research, medical/surgical/ pharmaceutical sales and fitness management to name a few.
“Any time you work in the medical field, you have to know and understand scientific writing and behavior change in order to apply evidenced based practice and influence positive lifestyle changes,” Whalen said. “Courses in behavior modification, scientific writing, strong undergraduate research opportunities and an outstanding alumni network really set Simpson’s program apart.”
