Simpson Professors Collaborate on World Premiere of The Emerald Earring

The Emerald Earring

Tallgrass Theatre is staging the world premiere of The Emerald Earring, a new play written by Simpson College professor of graphic design and local playwright Justin Nostrala and directed by Jennifer Nostrala, director of Simpson Productions and professor of theatre arts.

The production, which runs through May 4, is part of the 10th Annual Sarah Frank & Jack Balcombe Dream Project.

Set in Texas in 2022, The Emerald Earring begins with the unexpected discovery of a piece of jewelry in the back of a husband’s car — a moment that sets off a chain reaction, unraveling a marriage and sparking a deeper personal reckoning for Claire, the play’s central character.

As suspicions mount and tensions rise, Claire is forced to confront not only the fragile state of her relationship but also her own values and beliefs. Her personal journey intersects with broader social themes, inviting audiences to consider how individuals navigate difficult choices in times of cultural and political division.

The play touches on contemporary issues that remain at the forefront of national discourse, particularly those surrounding women’s rights and autonomy. Claire’s internal conflict and her evolving sense of self are central to a narrative that balances emotional intimacy with larger societal commentary.

The production explores the often-blurry line between private life and public issues, offering a layered and timely portrayal of one woman’s transformation.

Performances are being held at Tallgrass Theatre, 2019 Grand Ave., West Des Moines. Tickets are $35 and available at www.tallgrasstheatre.org/tickets or at the door. Questions about tickets can be directed to tickets@tallgrasstheatre.org.

With just a few performances remaining, The Emerald Earring offers audiences a compelling and reflective theatrical experience. The production closes May 4.
